AT MABIOIT, DTOIAMA. ’ Un. Ann Crist Visits the Keelty Institute and Meets Dr» Daniels—Some Experience. Dear Readers of the Banner f*“ i I thought perhaps you would like a few lines from this part of the j work. First I will say that lam busy and happy in my cure. It seems strange now after nearly four years of freedom from even a desire for morphine to be asked as I was a few days ago, “Do you ever feel that you must use it again?” I said no, no more than a person who had never felt the effect of it. I must tell you of our Keeley Institute. Mr. Crist and I have just returned from a visit with friends at Marion and while there visited the institute. As we were driving on Adams street and wondering if we were almost there I caught sight of the words so dear to every Keeley graduate—“ The Keeley Institute.” None but those who love the work as I do can know how beautiful it looked to me. The location is grand. A pfretty, clean, cool looking home, large and comfortable, with a wide veranda extending the entire front and side, inviting-.you to rest in the shade at all*hours of the day. Dr. Daniels;was not in so we waited in the reception room and I was pleased to note the air of taste and comfort displayed there. Handsome new oarpets covered the floor, soft, pretty curtains floated back from the open windows. * The archway into the next room was closed with beautiful dark heavy cuftains. The doctor soon returned and kindly showed us through his beautiful place, tb me it seemed more, like a beautiful home, than an institute. Through open doors you see nice appearing gen- . tiemen reading, writing, playing gaines and enjoying themselves as 'weir fancy dictates. ' Dr. W. V. Daniels is a Keeley " graduate; his whole soul is in the wwk and it does one good to talk With -him. His confidence and trust in the work is refreshing, : end it makes one feel that a loved q one would be safe in his care, but to fully appreciate the doctor and his surroundings one must visit the Keeley Institute at Marion, Thd.—Mrs. Ahn E. Crist. For terms and additional information about the institute and its work, write Dr. W. V. Daniela, Manager, Marion, Ind. i , ■ I'

As it is now nearing the close of the session it seems 'that there is no use of making the i fight, as we could get nowhere with I the bill.” I Washington, Jan. 22. —Only one . thing stands in the way of a soldiers’ service pension law —the cost of it. Such a law may be signed by the president before this session of congress ends, despite the one objection. It is for the House of Representatives to say. The senate, to the surprise of most persons, passed the bill without even indulging in a general discussion [ of the subject. Even Southern senators j voted for it. For years the talk had (been that it would be useless for the house to pass such a law because the senate would not agtee to it —o .. GEORGE BAKER SHOOTS BROTHER ’ Bullet Passes Through the Neck, Severs the Jugular Vein and Boy ►«* ■ - ' , Dies Almost Instantly. I A tragedy ,the result of gross care- ; lessness, was enacted at Willshire, . Sunday noon, at the home of George i’ Baker, an employee ®f the Clover Leaf » j Stone company. Mr. Baker and his . four sons ranging in age from thirteen ‘ |to nineteen years, are all employed at L.the stone quarry and constitute a part ' of a family in very meager circumt stances. All of the boys, despite their .. tender years and lack of experience tr and knowledge, have been permitted to carry revolvers. On Saturday, the . youngest boy, Edwin, aged thirteen l years, was handling his revolver, l when it was accidentally discharged, . the bullet barely missing his two-year- • old sister. This note of warning failed I to arouse the family to the necessity of taking the guns away from the r beys and as a result, one of the chill dren was almost instantly killed on : the following day. The oldest boy, [ George, aged nineteen years, was ( cleaning a revolver, and by accident, I I the hammer fell, discharging a bullet, t which struck his brother, Edwin, who I was sitting nearby, reading aloud. The bullet passed through bis neck , and severed the jugular vein, causing almost instant death.; Dr.R. R. RichIson held an inquest on the body and ■ ' his finding will be death by accident, I without criminal liability. The Baker , family has lived in Willshire one year, .having removed there from Columbus. • - (I ' " , - • -
A FIGHT ON VETERINARY BILL Effort to Abolish Examining Board Losses—Life Insurance Bill is Proposed. ... . ■ ■.<>* . .- . Indianapolis, Jan. 22. —The’house ol representatives today had a sharp fight on a bill to abolish the state board of veterinaries. The proposition to abolish, however, was killed. Several new bills were introduced, the principal one being a bill prepared by the insurance companies to take the place of the Babcock bill, which Indiana Insurance companies say would drive them out of business. The new bill is along the lines of talk Os the insurance men who appeared before the house Insurance committee last night. A bill to have automobiles carry a sign three-quarters of a foot high and a quarter foot wide, each stroke of each figure being an inch wide and the number displayed on front, back and side of the .machine was introduced. - ; : ~, , o Piles get quick relief rrom Dr. Shoop’s Magic Oointment Remember it’s made alone for Pilse —and it works with certainty and satisfaction. -'A MURDEROUS OLD WAG I Greatest Desperado in the World Lives , in Kentucky. Probably the most respected citizen in Eastern Kentucky mountain districts is old Shcakelford, who lives atthe head of Poor Fork Creek, in Perry county. Shackleford is getting old now —he must be about seventy, but there is no adventurous, fire-eating youth who cares to try conclusions with him. Too many have attempted that and died. He has a record of thir-ty-eight “killings” to his credit, a record that no Western desparado from Las Vegas to the Canadian line has ever equaled. He has been shot from . ambush but he has survived his I wounds, although this much cannot be said of the man that shot first. His neighbors stand in awe of him, and he is said to bear a charmed life. His cabin is decorated with coon skins, and over the front door is nailed the skin of the biggest rattlesnake ever killed in the Kentucky mountains. ( Shackleford’s most dreaded antagonist . in a fight was his wife, and he killed • her several years ago in a domestic j brawl. The militant old lady was giv- ( en an imposing resting place. She was buried on the top of Harlan Peak, ■ and her grave was dug eight feet deep.l Shackleford has directed that he be buried just above her when he dies. , ’ “I want folks to know that I come ’ out on top,” he said in giving his fa- ■ structkms.—From “Beyond the Gap,” 1 by ,C.
