The Croesus who believes his military record would be the brighter for the luster of additional government gold is Dr. E. E. Beeman ,the chewing gum manufacturer. He has been receiving $8 a month, and asks that it be increased to sl2. While he does not claim Cleveland as his home, his address is given the pension office as the Century Club in that city, an organization maintained by some of the Ohio city’s wealthiest men. No explanation is vouchsafed by Dr. Beeman why he need& this addition#! $4 a month.

Announcement was made at the offices of the Pennsylvania railroad company that Dr. Miles F. Porter had been appointed surgeon for the company, to succeed Dr. C. B. Steals'-, who recently resigned to accept 1 ’ a chair in a college of medicine in Kan: ns City. The appointment lakes effect immediately, and is a high tribute to the efficiency and reliability of Dr. Porter. The position of surgeon for a railroad company like the ' Pennsylvania is a difficult one to fill at times becoming strenuous. Dr. Porter has practiced his profession in this city all his life and is one of best known surgeons in this part of the country. The appointment is always made with the understanding, that the terms of office shall be of indefinite duration. >
