"Spider” Is a less attractive word than ‘"spinner,” but it is really ths same. “Spither,” the earlier form of the word, stood for “spinther,” meanrpiiiuer—the disappearance of the *‘n” before the “th" being compensated fur by tlx- lengthening of the vowel, just as "tooth” really represents "tonth." There was once in use another word for t’ie creature, that was ugly enough in t.’.raning—“attercop,” which appeals in Wyclif’s Bible. It signifies "poison bunch” and is still used in the north of England and in Antrim, Ireland, as an uncomplimentary term for a shrewish person. From “aftercop” or from a similar use of “cop” ot "cob,” a bunch, to mean a spider, tomes "cobweb.” A Green Old Age* “A green old age” is a phrase often grossly abused. It is a literal translation of Virgil’s description of Charon, the fer-yman of the nether regions. The poet speaks of him as “Jam senior, Bed cruda deo viridisque senectujir • (somewhat aged, but bis age was still fresh and Ttiis we might say of v”* do, of the green old age or a nonagenarian, however bale, Is sheer nonsense. j _ The Art of Doing: IVothlxr. There is a side of life for which no preparation at all is made. No life Is ®r can be one of unremitting work. Sooner or later every one has a day off and in nine cases out of ten has never been taught how to use it In the schools of our Utopia there will be professors of the great art of doing nothing, of “sitting on u gate.”—Loudon Saturday Review. Eels In Scotian#. Although eels abound in Scotch waters and are caught in great quantities, they are not considered fit food there. No matter how plentiful and how very fine and large they may be In any district of Scotland, no native will eat one. The objection to the eel Is said to be based on its serpent-like appearance and the fact that it is not overfastfdlous as to what It feeds on. Tons of choice eels for the London market are taken from streams that are not conspicuously free from sewage. RSeh. OLD FAMILIES. One of Them < lalms ti» Keneh Peyonil the Flood. The most ancient family in France, In so far as the tracing back of the ancestry in an unbroken line is concerned, is the royal house of Bourbon, which goes back to Robert le Fort, In the year 861. Next In point of antiquity comes the Rohan family, which for the last century, however, has been settled in Austria, the so called Rohans In France being not really Rohans, but merely Chabots, their only connection with the house of Rohan being by marriage. Then comes the house of NarbonnePelet, the head of which is the Due de Narbonne, who can trace bis lineage back without interruption to the year 410. Os course, in making this assertion, I do not take into consideration the somewhat mythical claim of the Duke of Levis-Mivepoix to be descended in a direct and unbroken line from Jacob’s son, Lc-vi. He has among his family pictures one old painting in which the Holy Virgin is represented as requesting the former Duke of Levis-Mircpoix to put an his hat, which be had doffed in salutation, she being depicted as uttering the words “Couvrez vous, mon cousin.” Another picture represents an ancestor of the Duke of Levis-Mircpoix navigating a small boat on the- waters of the deluge, he being too exclusive and high toned to share the ark with the Noah family and its belongings.— London Chronicle. Bonrdlng a flannom. Have you ever noticed the right way to get into a hansom when two people are riding? Few persons know what to do. In nine cases out of ten the one who enters first seats himself on the off side. But this is wrong. If, on getting in first, you take the near seat, your companion can then enter in ease and comfort, which otherwise he could not. To Waterproof Canvas. Scientific American gives this recipe for waterproofing for canvas: Soft soap dissolved in hot water and a solution of iron sulphate added. The sulphuric acid combines with the potash of the soap and the iron oxide is precipitated with the fatty acid as insoluble iron soap. This is washed and dried and mixed with linseed oil. It is onen easier to serve two mas ters than to master two servants.Phiiadelphia Record. ...Legal Advertising... APPOINTMENT OF ADMINISTRATRIX.
