State Fish and Game Ccmmis sioner Z T Sweeney, of Columbus, has sent to the auditor of state his report. It shows that up to date 24,166 hunter s licence-' have been issued by Commissioner Sweeny. Os his number *,oof‘ were issued: prior to January 1, 1905, which leaves a total of 16,166 license is snd during the year Each license costs 11. This money has been turned into the state treasury to the credit of the commissioner. It will be used principally in the enforcement of the fish and game laws of the state. Mr. Sweeney says the report from various parte of the state show a much better observance of the fish and game laws than in former wears. People have more respect for the laws and juries are readily con victing violators Daring the year <3,000 in .tines has been turned into the school fund from t-his source. L. W, Holt, the oil producer and contractor who has made a rich find in the Wren, Ohio, fields is making arrangements for extended development there. Three wells are owned in the original Wren field, two small producers and one, that has settled down to a good' fifty barrels producer. Other wells will be drilled at once and the field thorougely developed, and there is now no skepticism about it being one of the best paying fields in Indiana. And in speaking of Indiana, wells have been producing here ever since the famous Fearout well, drilled in 1885. The Wellington oil property c insists of . five wells with a production of sixty to seventy barrels daily. Three of these wells were drilled two years ago and two drilled in the last two months. They have one of the most complete plants to be found anywhere, with pip? Line facilities running right along their property. Gas wells drilled on the Cliffton and Garmore farms, [four sniies apart to the northeast, indicate that pools of oil can be found in that vicinity. Indiana and Ohio produced close to twenty four mil- *: an barrels of crude oil in 1904, which indic-es the importance these two states assume in the production of crude oil. There is a well being drilled on the Oliver Sheets' farm, adjoining the Wellington <>i company property r.y Thomas McDouall of Chi' go. and Elmira, N-w York, parties. The Standard is about o locate a we;! on the Tombleson farm. The Wellington company is Stirling a well on the Divid Gates’farm, j L. W. Holt has purchased the I Myers property and leases from I Hutt <te Johnson of Bradford, Pa and will bring in a well on the Mary Pence farm which joins a well on; the south, located on the Elmer Pence farm. This all indicates the' activity that is rife in the Wren field, and is the best recommends, tion that can be given, that one of the beet fields in the state will eventually be opened.

Ore-third of the land surface of the globe is covered with trees A Birmingham man named Batchelor ha? just married a young lady named W.ddow. A penny is estimated to change hands about 123,000 times in the course of its life. A paper chimney fifty feet high and fireproof is a curiosity to te seen at Breslau, Germany. Cats are licensed in Berlin, and every cat in that city must wear a metal badge bearing a number. Gibraltar may fairly be called the land of tunnels, there being over seventy miles of burrowed rock. London has only one mile of tramways to every 30,000 of her population. Manchester has one to every 5,000. The China Times of Peking is issued in seven languages—Chinese. Japanese, English, French, German. Russian and Italian. The Nile is noted forth“ variety of its fish. An expedition sent by the British museum brought home 9,ocb specimens. Glasgow has the largest tramway system of any town in the British Isles. Manchester stands second, while Liverpool makes a bad third. Lion tamers frequently perfume themselves with lavender. There is. it 13 said, no record of a lion ever having attacked a trainer who had taken the precaut. -n of u-.ng thi- s cine. in Fiji the coinage co:: -ists chiefly of whales’ teeth, those of greater value being dyed red. The natives exchange twenty white teeth for one red one, as we change copper for silver. Where Veaaeln Have Eyei. Painted on the prow of nearly all the junks, or Chinese sailing vessels, are to be seen huge eyes. It is believed by the superstitious inhabitants of China that if the eye, whi -h is raised as It relief, was not there the vessel could not see where to go and would therefore come to destruction. Eten it when at sea the eye got destroyed or damaged another would have to be painted in at once. No Chinaman will sail on a junk which is not adorned by a>. -ye, and even an English passenger boat which plies between two Chinese towns has a huge eye painted on each side of hei paddle boxes. Whitman on Emerson. I often say of Emerson that the personality of the man—the wonderful heart and soul of the man. present in all he writes, thinks, does, hopes—goes far toward justifying the whole literary business—the whole raft, good | and bad: the entire system. You see j I find nothing in literature that is valuable simply for its professional qual- i ity. Literature is onry valuable in the measure of the passion—the blood and muscle—with which it is invested—which lies concealed and active in it—j From Horace Traubel’s “With Walt , I Whitman In Camden’’ in Century. | Better Than Rpf' rencr«. j “Can you give me references from I your last place?’’ I “No. ma'am.
