Badly Defeated 1 “It's a shame to take the money’ 4 , says Capt. Collars, Thnrsday afternoon, at the close of the ball game between the Fort Wayne Shamrocks and the Rosenthals, and never did “Gappy” speak truer words in his life, the game proving t■ be nothing more than a nerve three, Fort Wayne winning as they phased and always having tie Rosenthals hopelessly beaten. Tne game started out as though the Rosenthals had an even break with their opponents, and the fans sat bick in their seats thinking they were to see a record breaking game, but how rudely were their blighted. The highest ambition of our Irish friends seemed to be to cross the home plate and make all the scores they could, and in this they succeeded to a certain extent, piling up a grand total of twenty-two and would possibly have gotten more hud they not become tired by their own exertions. As it was, the the scoter was short on paper and had just sent to town for more when the game ended to the relief of all present. So the Shamrocks have come and gone and those who so much desired to see them play a e ia is ' "<l

but the poor Rosenhtals were made to suffer by their presence, and their percentage column now shows one more game lost. The Rosenthals certainly put up the worst fielding game seen here this season, making a total of fourteen misplays. Shortstop Linn was the chief offender, having eight of the fourteen errors charged to him. It seemed utterly impossible for him to stop a ground ball and when he did succeed in stopping one he would throw it away. Linn's misplays alone, resulted in at least eight of the twenty-two runs scored by the Shamrocks. Still, he was not the only offender, Devinney, C. Peterson andLeßrun, all outfielders, contributing to the "error column and all their errors proving to be disastrous. There is no doubt but that the Shamrooks is one of the fastest independent teams today playing ball, the team being composed of hard working-hitt' is, fine base runners and good fielders and the men play together hke clock w<rk, always on the alert and taking “dvantage of every misplay and mis-throw of their opponents. The team is made up of a gentlemanly class of fellows wl o

THE GREAT SOUTHWEST. • MANY SEEKING HOMES WHERE LANDS ARE CHEAP AND CLIMATE IS MILD. • Low Rates for Homeseekers and Colonists Twice "a Month. Many farmers in the Northern and Eastern states are selling their high priced landsand locating in the Southwest —in Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Manv who have been unable to own their homes in the older country are buying land at the low prices prevailing in the new country — $5, $lO, sls per acre and up. These lands are mostly cut-over timber lands, some of them possessing a deep rich scil producing corn, wheat, oats, clover, cotton, fruit and vegetables. Well improved farms are scattered throughout this country. Many places with small clearings and some improvements can be bought very cheap. Our descriptive literature gives a fairly good idea of this country. It tells about the soil, crops, climate, people, schools, churches, water and health. It contains maps showing locations of counties, towns, railways and streams, and gives names and addresses of real estate dealers in the towns. Reduced rates for homeseekers and colonists are in effect first and third Tuesdays of each month, byway of St. Louis, Cairo or Memphis and the Cotton Belt Route.
