Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Kalver went to Chicago Sunday, where Mr. Kalver will buy a fall stock of clothing. They were accompanied by Miss Grace Shoenfield, who was visiting here with them. Jack Bubmeyer, of Fort Wayne, is in the city and informed us that he was busily engaged in making baloon ascensions and was meeting with good success, and has up to date made sixteen ascensions. He makes one at Ridgeville the latter part of this week. “Children,” said the country minister addressing a Sunday school, “why are the we like flowers?” And a small boy in the infant class ■whose breath smelled of vermifuge rose up and made reply; ‘ ‘ Worms and the minister crept under the pulpit chair to hide his emoton. Dell Locke came home last night from Chicago. He spent several days in that city and while there looked at furniture to decide about what he wants for the new Bliss Hotel, He made no purchases, however, and says that all of the furniture for the hotel will be bought through Bluffton dealers.— Bluffton News. The Thomas Moran farm in Jefferson township is developing into a real oil field and now boasts of the three best producing wells in the county. Number three came in yes terday and is the best in the bunch, being good for 150 barrels per day. The wells are owned by the Empress Oil Co. and they are likewise well pleased with the result of their work and investment. The three monster wells ars located on a fifteen acre tract of land. Miss Mabel Dull, a daughter of Sylvester Dull, who lives two miles north of Willshire, died at Wenantchee, Wash., July Ist. She went there several months ago to be with a brother, who lives near that town. She was only eighteen years and ten months of age. She was very well known in Will shir, having worked for a number of families in this town.—Willshire Herald. Miss Dull formerly lived here and was well known. Her illness has been mentioned in this paper.

A man in a western tQjvn hanged himself to a bedpost by his suspenders. The coroner's jury was some time in coming to a decision in the case, but the foreman finally announced that the deceased came to his death by coming home drunk and mistaking himself for his sjnud. The tenis club is getting in their work good and plenty these days and at four o’clock in the morning you may see them wending their way to Steeles Park where the court s laid out and where they will practice for several hours. The boys are getting into the proper condition and when they think they are fit will challenge Blutffvn for a eries of games. Marshal Cordua received a letter Monday from sJoe Osborne who is now located at Michigan City serving his time, asking the Marshal to write him and give him all the news. Joe says he is feeling well and sent his regards to all his Decatur friends. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Cole and Thur' man and Pauline Cole of Garrett, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jamey and daughter Evelyn of Fort W ayne and Mrs'James D. Bardge of Garrett returned to their homes Tuesday after spending a few days with L. T. Brokaw and family. The young ladies of the Methodist church of Mouroe will give an enter tainment at the Monroe church next Saturday evening. It will consist of choruses, drills, tableaux, pantomines, joint recitations and etc. Profesor Withans will assist. The concert will be fine and ought to be well patronized. A. Tubman, contractor who is building the grade for the Ft. Wayne & Springfield Traction Companv, is walking on crutches as the result of stepping on a nail a day or two ago The nail penetrated the heal to a depth of nearly three inches inflicting a very painful woun'd and requiring the services of a physician. The National Commission Co., have arranged to open their branch office in room four of the Stone block. F. L. Goodwin will be in charge and expects to be ready for business by Wednesday. He will do a brokerage business, dealing in stocks and margins and will secure reports by a direct telegraph line, which is being constructed now. No wagers an the outcome of the presidential election were reported on the curb in New York Friday, but the odds seem to he shifting in favor of Parker. Dagan & Campbel had Parker money to the extent of $3,000, which was offered against $5,000. Winchel & Co., were offering SSOO even money that Parker would carry New York state. None of the offerings was taken. A representative of Marshall, Spader & Co., was reported to have succeeded in placing $5,000 at even money with a prominent democrat that Parker will carry New York state. It is said that half a dozen republicans divide the bet. Locally there has been no betting as yet. E.L. Carrol, the grain man, is undoubtedly the busiest person in town at present, as he is remodeling his elevator at the Clover Leaf and getting everything in shpae to move the frame elevator that now stands on the Erie right of way over near his Clover Leaf property. He has bought the old hoop mill from the Decatur Egg Case Co. and has converted the same into a hiy barn in which to store hay waiting shipment. He also leased the land on which said building are situated and has contracted with the Erie raliroad to run a switch up to the buildings. When all of this work is completed Mr. Carrol will have one of the largst and most extensive elevators in the Northern part of Indiana. Work on the same should all be Complete within sixty days. James Hoover, a seven year old son, of Mrs. Dora Hoover, of Ossian, was fatally injured at nocn Thursday by falling beneath the wheels of a wagon load of bricks on the west side of Ossian. The boy fell face downward and both front and rear wheels of the heavily loaded wagon ran across his body before the team could be stopped. The one wheel of the wagon ran across the child’s back causing serious internal injuries the other ran across and completely crushed the upper part of his right leg. The boy was sitting on the front seat of the wagon when near the Glass school house, by a sudden jostle in the wagon he lost his seat and fell, falling directly under the wheels and was run over before the driver knew what had happened.
