Shorift Butler was trill for late (■'Friday nisiht and assisted by Amos Fisher and Frank Ernst drove to the Christener farm and brought Gobttlieb to jail where he is constantly guarded to prevent him inflicting injuries upon himself. He is kept in a separate department of the jail. Mr. Jamison of Chicago, who was to have been here tonight to arrange fqr removing his factory to this city, has telegraphed Mathias Kirsch that owing to business engagements whiob have come up unexpectedly. he will be unable to reach here today, but will come within a few days and will advise later as to exact date. The meeting at the club rooms has, therefore, been declared off. Mrs. Charley Bell was hostess to the Young Matrons Club Friday afternoon. The home was beautifully decorated with flowers and foliage. After the usual time spent at fancy work and conversation a drawing contest was indulged in at which Mrs. Dick Neptune carried off the honors. At five o’clock Mrs. Bell served a dainty and deli - cious lap supper. The outside guests were Mesdames Harry Helm, Dick Townsend, Don Quinn, Lulu Sweringer of Chiogao and Misses Carrie Cogswell and Carrie Craig. The Farmers and Merchant’s bank at Bryant which has been operated since its inception as a private bank by B. F. Miller is to be changed to a state bank- The organization has been completed with fourteen stockholders. The b ink is to have a capital stock of $25,000. The stockholders are B. Mller, George R. Houser, \V. H. Elberson, James Rupel, Ablert Brunson, Valentine 4 lauding, \V. H. Huckerede, George G. Montgomery and Peter L. Treeoe. The bank has been a very prosperous institution from the start. Lyman Bros., the well known picture firm, are continuing to increase their business and accordingly are arranging to take .care of same. They have leased the Gregory building, corner erf Third and Madison streets and will re move their offices there by July Ist. They will secure some additional help and will arrange their new quarters in a tasty and convenient manner. This conoern is as good one for Decatur and we appreciate that fact. A number of people are employed at excellen. wages, both here and on the road and a large per cent of it is spent right here in Decatur. As stated they are increasing and before long their force will no doubt be doubled i ‘Squire Frank Foreman, and Drs. Franz and Reusser, Berne, held an j insanity inquest Friday after-1 noon on Gottlieb Christener jr. at' the home of his parents about three miles south east of Monroe. He was declared insane and will be taken to East Haven asylum as soon as possible. One of the board said “He is the most violent man I ever saw and it is almost impossible to handle him.” He would have been sent away at once but cannot go until he is vaccinated. An effort to perform that duty will be made today but it will be no easy job. The case is a very sad one. Gotblieb is but twenty six years old. a healthy robust fellow weighing 170 pounds. For some time he has been working at Fort Wayne and was well thought of, being industrious and of good habits. Suddenly his mind began to fail without any apparant cause. He came home two months ago and has constantly grown worse. He refuses to eat and has not slept for days. He talks continously and owing to his great strenght his family and neighbors are afraid of him. He will probably be taken away Monday.

A splendid program being arranged ;for the ocassion p.T[Every body is invited to attend. ✓ We desire to express our sincere thanks to the Masonic fraternity, the Rebekahs and the many friends and neighbors who so thoughtfully aided us during our sad bereavement, the death of our husband and father. Mrs. H. H, Myers and Family. 1 The premium lists for the Great Northern Indiana Fair ’ to be held here "August 30, 3i and September fsTand 2nd, are all complete and ready or distribution. They will be sent out immediately. The book includes sixty two pages and each one says something. The premiums are all worth going after and the lists include evreything usually seen at an up to date fair, in fact they compare favorably with state | fair lists and are another proof l that the fair of 1904 will be the biggest and best ever seen in Indiana. The great northern is an association that we may well feel proud of. Remember the fair dates. The Barnum & Bailey bill car arrived in Portland Friday and will (spend two days in billing the sur!rounding country for the exhibition l in this city on Friday, June 24th. I The Barnum & Bailey show has just returned from six years in foreign countries and is larger and better than ever and justly lay claim to being the greatest show on earth. The big shows have all skipped the smaller towns this year, so if Winchester, Decatur and Bluffton citizens want to see the real thing, come to Portland and see a metropolitian show in a big city. Only five cities will be visited in Indiana, the show coming here from Marion. From here they go to Findlay, Ohio.—Portland Sun. Guy Johnson who just returned Siturday from Pittsburg where he accopmained a load of horses for his father informes us that he had quite a serious mishap at Ft. Wayne his load of horses being in a wreck at that place and every animal in the load being more or less injured. The load was however taken on to Pittsburg where the real extent of their injuries was made public and Mr. Johnson was forced to call his sale off at the Riverside barn on this account “Guy L. ” the horse who has quite a record had his right hip broken and it is hardly probable that he will ever be able to be raced again. Elmer is certainly in hard luck; and is considerable looser on not being able to pull off his sale. He will demand pay of the railroad company as soon as he returns. Surveyor McKean has completed specifications for four and one half squares of brick street for that enterprising business town of Berne. This addition will practically cover the greater portion of that place with the best kind of streets on earth and insures them of being kept high and dry for all time to come. The contract will no doubt be let within a few weeks, and the street completed yet this summer. There is no flies on Berne, a fact that has been evident for a long time. With these improvements, Geneva building new streets and ten macadam road contracts now under way it will readily be seen that Adams county from one end to the other is rapidly advancing with a progress that has'no hot air attachments. MANY SEEKING HOMES WHERE LANDS ARE CHEAP AND CLIMATE IS MILD. Low Rates for Homeseekers and Colonists Twice a Month. Many farmers in the Northern and Eastern states are selling their high priced lands and locating in the Southwest —in Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Manv who have been unable to own their homes in the older country are buying land at the low prices prevailing in the new country--85, 810, 815 per acre and up. These lands are mostly cut-over timber lands, some of them possessing a deep rich soil producing corn, wheat, oats, clover, cotton, fruit and vegetables. Well improved farms are scattered throughout this country. Many places with small clearings and some improvements can be boughtyvery cheap. Our descriptive literature gives a fairly good idea of this country. It tells about the soil, crops, climate, people, schools, churches, water and health. It contains maps showing locations of counties, towns, railways and streams, and gives names and addresses of real estate dealers in the towns. Reduced rates for homeseekers and colonists are in effect first and third Tuesdays of each month, byway of St. Louis, Cairo or Memphis and the Cotton Belt Route. Let us send you our literature and quote you rates. Address E. W. Laßeaume, Gen. Pass, and Ticket Agent, Cotton Beit Route, St. Louis. Mo.
