Fred H. Bohnke of Root township has purchased of Frisinger & Co. Fransoe, a handsome American and Belgian stallion. He is one of the most perfect horses ever imparted by this well known firm, is three year old and a beautiful sorrel. While the price has not been made public, it is known to have been a nice figure. Frisinger & Co. accepted on trade a three year old Belgian colt which they sold today to M. W. Southard of Cnion City. They also sold Mr. Southard a splendid road horse at a good price. The county commissioners are in their regular session, and one of the things that is causing the individual members a slight touch of cold sweats, is the wholesale slaughter to the public roads and bridges, caused by the high waters of last week. Take the county over and the damage was extensive especially to levies and bridges, which will have t j be renaired before any travel can be resumed. T) block this is the low state of the road repair fund, which were made simply to keep the roads in good condition without the additional cost of flood damage. The wt.t rs were the highest for twenty se"on years so say many of thephilos mhers of time and events and natur.di.v if this be true, much damage could not help but result. The commissioners will try and do all necessary repair that will temporarilly place the roads and bridges in condition for travel. The home of Michael Wertzberger on South Third street Sunday was the scene of a little tire, the result of which will reqiure them to buy a new couch, new carpert. new curtain and new weather boarding as all of these articles were sobaoly damaged that they will be practically worthless and the whole amount of damage from fire, water and smoke, will amount to nearly a hundred dollars. The only theory tnat any of the members of the family can advance as to the origin of the fire is that about ten o'clock Mr. Wertzberger attempted to light the gas and while striking a match a spark must have fallen into the lace curtain, catching tire immediately, for as he turned the curtain was a mass of flames. He gave the alarm and all members of the family responded and in a short time had it under control, but while doing so Mrs. Wertzberger had her hands 'badly burned. No alarm was sent to the station as it was not deemed necessary.
For the first time since the levee east of town was rebuilt and made higher the high waters covered that pike Monday morning and the lands east of town were hidden from view by many fee of water. Judge Studabaker, John F.ilk and others, whose homes are between Bellview and the bridge were bottled in bv high waters. The St. Marvs river raised over two feet during Sun-1 day night and continued at an inch an hour. Old settiers say the waters in this locality wen- j the highest in thirty seven years In 1867 the river was entirely over : the east road and at that time a well kuown citizen named Evenson was drowned. No apprehension wa> felt here as almost as much more water would have to fall to cause any serious trouble in either the residence or buisness part of Decatur, Fred Scheiman's packing house suffered slightly from the water and some kettles in the ”ard floated down river but were rescued. Many suppositions are advanced to the cause of the continued rise as no rain has fallen here for thirty six hours. It is generally believed that the overflow of the reservoir while it doesn't feed diroetly into the St. Marys has caused the water to back into the river so rapidly that it cannot be carried away. A telephone message from Celina Monday said the water in the resevoir had fallen two or three inches today and it is believed the danger for the present is over. More rains next week means the worst flood ever known in this locality. At Portland the waters are also receding and by tomorrow or Monday people will be located in their homes again. Every railway running into this city has suffered from washouts, the Clover Leaf at Fort Jennings, Ohio and the Erie at Kenton. The G. R. & I. have nearly a mile of track out between Geneva and Bryant and trains run only to those towns and then back up. A whole train of gravel was taken there Monday and a number of boats with which to lay new track.
Word has T)een received from Miss Irene Bell stating that she is getting along nicely now and getting stronger each day and now hopes to fully recover before long. This is encouraging news for her young friends Charles Teeple has accepted a position with Barney Kalver & Sons in the Hub Clothing house and began his duties last Monday as salesman and assistant buyer. Charley has had several years experience in the clothing business and is competent and popular clerk whom the Hub were lucky to secure.
Manager Planque of the HuntingSunday and had a long talk with ton base ball team was in the city Manager Hively concerning their game here on the 17 of this month. He stated that he had a strong team organized and was coming here with the determination of winning this game if such a thing was possible. This kind of talk is cheap but as the old slang expression goes,"they will have to show us.” The team here expects to do a great deal of work between now and the 17th and when Huntington arrives they will not have the soft snap they are expecting. Pitcher France states that he is daily working out in the Huntington gymnaisium and is now in mid-season form and anxious and ready to make some team look cheap. The J. W. Place Companv will be the heaviest losers from the recent floods of anyone in Decatur, in i fact they are practically the only people whose damage financially is | more than a few dollars. This; morning two of their immense ice j houses were washed out entailing i a loss of about #3OOO. The one near their big wholesale plant in the j south part of town gave away first. I the constant wash of the waters' causing the end walls to finally break and the ice which had recent-; ly been packed there after weeks of work and great expense tumbled into the St. Marys river in great heaps. Shortly afterward came the news that the big ice house in the north part of town had likewise given way and the result was similar to the other. Several hundred tons of ice will be mined and just at a time when the company would have begun to convert it into cash. The loss is a very heavy one and is estimated by Mr. Confer, a member of the firm at from #3.500 to #3.000. and perhaps more. It is believed a portion of the ice may be saved if the waters continue to re cede as rapidly as they have during the past twenty four hours. However, it will be several days before any work can be done at it. The St. Marys has fallen about three feet since last evening and is still going down rapidly. The levee east of town is clear of water but the big ditches along each side are still brim full. Reports of slight losses amcng the farmers who live along the river have came in. Fences and out buildings have been wrecked and while each is small the combined loss by the floods in the north part of the county will total a sum of several thousand dollars
