Many of our readers are interested in the mortgage exemption law which allows one to deduct the sum S7OO from the valuation of their properety for taxation under certain conditions. This has heretofore been permisabit' after the first of April but under the new law enacted by the legislature of 1903 changed this date to March Ist to comply with the work of the assessors who also start on that day. The new law is found in section 36 of the Acts of p.)C3 and reads as follows : SEC. 36. That Section 1 of an act entitled “An act concerning the taxation of real estate incum bered by mortgage and declaring an emergency, ’’ which became a law without the Governor’s signa ture, March 4. 1899, is hereby amended to read as follows: Sec tion 1. That any person being the owner of real etsate. liable for taxation within the State of Indiana, and being indebted in any sum, secured by mortgage debt upon real estate, may have the amount »f such mortgage indebtedness, not exceeding seven hundred dollars, icxsisting and unpaid upon the first d ly of March of any year, deducted from the assessed valuation of ‘mortgage premises for that veur and the amount of such valuation remaining after such deduction -hull have been made form the basis for assessment and taxation for said real estate for said year: Provitled, Fiiat no dedneion shall lie allowed greater titan one half of I such assessed valuation of said ‘ real estate.
