means t< do right in the future and he asks to be forgiven if he has harmed anyone. Curtis it will be remembered became famous in this part of Indiana by his daring balloon ascensions. one in pmcivlar which he made in Bluff on being a record breaker, his air ship sailing upward 2500 feet before he cut loose the parachute. His time will soon be out and Curtis expects to return i to Decatur and prove to his friends that he is a man in every sense of , the word. A representative of our paper dropped into the new cigar factory of Blume A- Bogner and was certainly surprised to see the amount of work on hand and how busy al] the employees of the firm were kept. The firm is located in the entire flat , over the Journal office and is up to - d ite cigar fact >ry Mr. Blume in- . f me d us that he had just received a ton of fine tobacco and from the ! L ' inr./l r'• 4l* Hovoc • - .J- > tting ar and he i- doing some business and he further informed us that he is now 15.GC0 cigars liehind in his work and is trying to sec-.tre more men to help him out as i he cann-t supply all of his orders. Mr. Elume manufactures the Eagle. Bill Eagle, Indian* Gentleman, j Hoosi r T .vine, and his new brand The Interurl an. He ha< in hi- emJ . . . ed from T m ja. Fl ri la and is an expert cigar maker. From an appearance, Bums A E -gner are an enter-p-isir.g firm. A narrow e cap- from a serious conflagration was experienced at the heme of E Woods Sunday morning. When they retired late Saturday night the gas was left burning, although it was thought to have been turned low. The home got uncomfortably warm and at four o'clock Mr. Woods arose for the ■purpose of investigating the cause. He fond the heating stove red hot all over aud the wood work nearly sizzling with heat. It was with difficulty that the supply of gas was shnt off and had it been permitted to run wild for fifteen minutes long*er, it is not at all improbable that a serious conflagaration would have resulted and perhay - their home consumed in fire before aid could reach the scene As a result they are all congratulating themselves on a narrow escape. As winter approaches it might not be out of place to bring to mind the danger of natural gas with its present uncertain pressure. While the supply may be more than we conjecture and the service better, yet it will never again maintain that staple; standing of several years ago. Great care should be maintained at every home in consequence of this uncertainty. I

The owners are anxious to have the building encksed before! winter weather arrives and d- ing ill in their power to push things along I' has been agreed to build the fr ent of the block just as it was before with display window on each side of the corner room. It was j previ usly intend -d to only have a i front window and to build the root: | for a banking h use but this idea has been alstndoned. One of the m st social events f the seasen was theperdo party given Wednesday at the C. Y. M. Mrs. William Harting finally capturing the ladies first prize, a handsome chocolate pitcher, and Frank Gass, the gentlemen s first prize, a hat brush. The boo- ; bies were won by Miss Rose Fullenkamp and Frank Wemhoff. and for their display of talent were each j given an all day sucker, which they are today busily engaged in nursing. After the pedro contest delicious refreshments were served. I ard which was following by a tripping of the light fantastic until i a late hour. The music for this feature of the evening's entertainment was furnished by the Aeolian famous rag time orchestra, and was harmonious and just the thing for dancing. It was one of the most successful and enjoyable events ever given at these club rooms. J. H. Hall and son stated to oar rep >rter this morning that they had been notified yesterday that the i business lots they had purchase: advanced sixty per cent in price. Wednesday, the closing day of th-? Monroe Lyceum meeting was just as interesting as any previous day The program"opened with devotional service by Rev. J. S. Cain, being followed bv interesting addresses by Revs. W. H. Daniel and C. A Lose on past orial visitations The next was J. C. Orbison, state ar<rney for the anti-salon Jus’ prior to his address, the higher grades of the Monroe public schools came into the convention in a body and as an emblem of their patriotism they carried the American flag. Mr. Orbison gave an extensive description of what the saloon is. Perhaps one of the best papers read at the morning session was the one by Rev. J. A. Patters n. who strongly urged the retention of the present probationary system. In the afternoon Rev. A D. Burkett led the devotional. The fixing of a place for the next session occasioned much interest. Monroe. Fort Wayne. Spencerville and Waterloo were all placed before the convention for their consideraation. and in the contest Spencerville won with the most votes Following this Rev. Ralph C. Jones spoke upon church loyalty. The speaker was in good voice and made a splendid effort, sufficiently so to make Iwatur proud ot one of her s .ns The private sessions for criticism proved of great merest, all rhe ministers being thoroughly reviewed and shown their defects, if any existed. The evening service closed the convention with an inspiring sermon by Rev. X. Paul Barton, a former pastor and after i this was a consecration service led by Rev. Lewis Rehl. The convention was one of the best ever held in the district and a spirit of revival ( was manifest throughout.
