WHEN TfiEimOLS OPEN. As the time draws near the date of the opening of the public schools over Adams county, becomes an interesting subject. It is interesting alike to both scholar and teacher, and for the benefit of them both, we publish herewith the day and date. Decatur—Tuesday, Sept. 1. Berne—Monday, Sept. 7. Geneva —Wednesday, Oct. 14. Union,tp.—-Monday Sept, 7. Root—Monday Oct. 12. Preble—Monday, Sept. 7. Kirkland—Monday, Sept. 21. Washington—Monday, Sept. 14. St. Marys—Monday Sept. 7. Blue Creek—Monday, Sept. 28. Monroe—Monday, Oct. 5. Hartford—Monday, Oct. 5. French, Wabash and Jefferson have not as yet been determined, but it is likely will be in a few days and then announced. The prospects are flattering for a successful school year, and the perfect harmony prevailing adds greatly to this very pleasant state of affairs. There is one thing sure, the S hoots of the county are not to be sneezed at. They are in a state of progress highly satisfactory to all concerned, and under the guidance of an excellent corps of teachers already selected, they will proceed to continue along the same lines of success. Mrs. Albert Hudson who has been a sufferer with consumption for some time past died Fridop at 1:30 o'clock at her home in South Tenth street. The deceased was twenty-three years, six months and twenty-two days old and leaves a husband and two children to survive her. The funeral will be held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at the United Brethren church. Homer King the proprietor of the First Street feed barn had a tussel with two thugs Friday night which but for the appearance of a passerby would undoubtedly have resulted seriously. He was on his way home from Geneva where he had taken three school teachers and when he was driving near the Wabash river bridge between Berne and Geneva two men rushed out. one stopping the horses and the other grabbing the driver. A mix--up followed and both of the ruffians were pitted against King. In the meantime a man driving toward Geneva came up and the assailants took to the woods. During the excitement the team which King was driving dashed down the road and went alone to Berne where they were found several hours later. King was thus forced to walk a considerable distance. Why he should be assaulted in a strange country at the dead of night seenis very, strange Mr. King. It is hardly profianfe that -the men were after money for highway robbery is rarely heard of and the only probable theory is that the men were lying in ambush for some enemy and being partly under the influence of drink had mistaken <heir man.

There is an old allegorical picture of a girl seared at a ■ grass-hopper, but in the act of heedlessly treading on a snake. This is paralleled by the man who spends a large sum of money for building a cyclone cellar, but neglect to provide his ■ family with a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy as a safeguard againt bowel complaints whose victims outnumber those of the cvclone a hundred to one. Out in Kansas where they are frequently visited by heavy storms, the papers are telling all kinds of storm stories. The following are only a few of the many told daily: plow in the field and scooted. The wind took that plow and turned it around and around in a widening circle until the whole field was nearly plowed up. Another was a knot hole in the bin, and the wind sucked every cob in the place through the knot hole leaving the corn neatly shelled within. caution: This is not a gentle word —but when you think how liable you are not to i known and a remedy that has had the [ largest sale of any medicine in the world since 1868, for the cure and treatment of consumption and throat and lung troubles without losing its great popularity all these years, you will be thankful we called your attention to Boschee's German Syrup ' There are so many ordinary cough i remedies made by druggists and i others that are cheap and good for i light colds perhaps, but for severe coughs, bronchitis, croup—especially for consumption, where there is difficult expectoration and coughing during the nights and mornings, there is nothing like German Syrup.
