IN A DEATH TRAP Scene of Horror During a Stampede In Birmingham Negro Church. MORE THAN A HUNDRED KILLED Mistaken Cry of Fire Causes a Wild Rush Which No Power Could With stand, and Many Are Swept to Their Death. Birmingham, Ala., Sept. JO. —The na ttonal convention of Negro Baptists which met in the Shiloh Baptist church three days ago, came to an abrupt and awful termination lest night in a panic caused by a fight between two men in the rear of the edifice. Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee, W. H. Council ot Normal, Ala., and R. R. Wright of Savannah, Ga., three ot the most prominent educators of the race, were on the program to speak and the church was crowded, when suddenly the audience was thrown into a panic by a conflict between two men. There were cries of “fight,” “fight,” which the assembled throng took for the more terrifying alarm of “fire,” and a wild rush ensued for the exits. In the awful crush of humanity more than one Hundred persons were killed and as many more seriously injured. CAUSE FOR MOURNING Disaster At Negro Baptist Convention Grows. Birmingham, Ala., Sept. 22.—Sunday was a day of funerals in Birmingham, the remains of thirty-eight victims of the panic in Shiloh church being interred in the various cemeteries for negroes around the city. All of the negro churches were crowded and the naturally excitable nature of the Southern negro was wrought to a high pitch by the eulogistic sermons over the dead bodies at the various churches. The death-list is now known to number 105 and 100 of these have been identified. The police assert that in addition at least five bodies were taken to private houses. This would swell the number to 110. All of the dead negroes identified are residents of Birhilngham except George Wright, who is said to be from Savannah, Ga. Tn nearly all of the churches for whites sums were raised to assist the negroes who are unable to give their dead proper burial, and with amounts contributed by wealthy citizens, a burial fund aggregating SSOO has been accumulated. Investigation Begun. Birmingham, Ala., Sent. 23. —Wm. Hicks, the negro insurance agent with whom J. H. Ballou, the negro lawyer, engaged in an altercation which, it is said, caused the disaster in Shiloh church Friday night, is under arrest. An investigation of the cause of the disaster was begun in the superior criminal court today.
