CowGKESSMax Crows appeared be- ! f ire the republican state committee ’ last week and made a heart rendering appeal for help in his congressional race. It is said that his appeal was written in tears that S owed in copious streams, and in al! was the greatest shock the state committee had yet re-; ce.ved. They promised him help.' what else could they do. but we doubt even if the angels could save him ’ from inevitable defeat. “• Congress max Cbomer was in the city yesterday', but unlike the usual good natured George he was extremely j exclusive. But then his state of' mind is slightly off color and it could not be expected that he would be very 1 gay. He put in his time in secret I counsel with what remains of his political machine and it is hinted that during the day he had several duck fits over the condition he found himself. It is certainly discouraging to a man who actually wants to go io congress. The president, if we may believe certain enemies, has thrown himself into the hands of a receiver. Several prominent republican senators have been his guests by invitation, and the interpretation put upon the gathering, is that the president seeks light upon the question of what be shall say on his coming tour. We are told that hie trust talk in New England was thoroughly distasteful in money circles, and that be has been advised not to repeat it in the middle statee and the northwest. Cautioned in this wav. be is represented as in doubt as to the proper course, and in a mood to be advised. The cowboy has been changed into a tenderfoot To say nothing of the grievances of the local g. o. p. against Congressman Cromer, what on earth -or elsewhere —can you dig out of his four years record in congress to appeal' to your pride of statesmanship. Does be measure up and what has he done! He had a speech printed in the congressional record favoring the exclusion of the Chinese from this country. Such a bill passed the lower house of congress and every democrat and re publican voted for it. U pon one other occasion he made a lew remarks about the classification of rural mail service. These comprise his sole pub I lie utterances in congress, and for them be has received JJO.OOOin salary Are they worth it! There is not a membqy of the Eagle Club or a republican in Adams countv who could not beat that record in thirty days. 'Cromer’s retirement in November would smash to smithereens the pres- • ent congressional machine and enable the republicans of the district to send ' a real live statesman to the congress jof the United Statee.

When it comes down to the real fact of the matter, it is plainly evident that the republican pertv'is trying to carry water on both shoulders. Some of them sav the party is for tariff revision; others say that it is for tariff rerisipn at some future time, and that time is very indefinite; while others assert that the tariff must absolutely be let alone. Between all these views, tne party is revision and anti-revision at the same time, and on both sides of the fence at once. But the democrats are unanimously for tariff .revision, and they are consistently so. . They even went so far as to unite in a formal invitation to the republican majority in the past ses- ■ i sion of congress to join them in leg»s---1 j lation that would destroy the monopoly of the food trust, and withdraw protection from all trusts which sell American goods to foreigners cheaper than to our own people, when they ,la d all partisanship aside anti by so diu>g agreed to remote it from* the pale of partisanship up to the higher plane of American principle®. The' republicans completely ignored the proposition. They are, therefore. ’ absolutely and undeniably responsible for the continued extortions of the i trusts. It is a responsibility they |cannot shirk; a responsibility that st
I they cannot run away from; a respo®' sibilitv thev cannot overcome tbougfi thev fill the land with cries of pr* perity. which is a prosperity of trusts, from now until doomsday. _ A DMIXJSTRATOR S SALE.
