AN ISLAND IS LOST Torishima, Off the Cost of Japan Overwhelmed By Volcanic Eruption. ALL THE INHABITANTS PERISH Little Island Now Covered by Volcanic Debris and All the Houses Have Disappeared — One Hundred and Fifty Lives Lost. Yokohama, Aug. 19. —The little island of Torishima was overwhelmed by a volcanic eruption between Aug. 13 and 15 and all the inhabitants, numbering 150 persons, were undoubtedly killed. The island is covered with volcanic debrie and all the houses on it have disappeared. The eruption is still proceeding, and is accompanied by submarine eruptions in the vicinity. which make it dangerous for vessels to approach the island. Torishima is one of a chain of islands extending between the Bonim Islands and Hondo, the biggest island of Japan. HOSTILE MOROS Attacks Upon the Outposts Being Renewed. Manila, Aug. 19. —The Moros in Mindanao are renewing their attacks on the outposts and packtrains of the American column at Lake Lanao, which is under the command of Capt. J. J. Pershing of the Fifteenth cavalry. The Americans have successfully repulsed the Moro attacks and have suffered no losses. The commanders of the American forces in Mindanao report aggressive action against the Moros to be necessary and ask permission to move against Bacoled and other strongholds of the hostile Mohammendans. There are about 2,000 American soldiers in Mindanao available for the desired aggressive movement It is believed that this number is sufficient to defeat the Moros. A force of native constabulary engaged a band of ladrones in a sharp fight last Saturday near Caloocan. about four miles north of Manila. The arrival of reinforcements for the constabulary won them the victory. Four members of the constabulary were killed and one was wounded. The ladrones left three of their number dead but carried off their wou; led. The chase of the Cavite ladrones through the mountains of that province continues. Forces of native constabularyhave had encounters with the bands of Felizardo and Montallon. Several of the ladrones were killed or captured. | Will Welcome Taft. Manila, Aug. 18. —Governor Wm. H.
