Union's Demands Granted. Chicago. June 9. —The threatened strike today of all the allied unions employed by the different meat pack- I ing concc rns was averted last night j by the stockyards company surrendering to the Stockyards Employes’ tin- ■ ion. All the demands of the union were granted, and the cattle drivers I who were recently discharged after forming a union returned to work this morning in their former places. Horse Train Wrecked. Bellefontaine. 0.. June 7.—A special horse train on the Cleveland. Cincinnati. Chicago anil St. Louis railroad was wrecked near Mix station yesterday. injuring about twenty valuable horses out of the ninety-one on the train. Brakeman James Borden of Ansonia was killed and Engineer Daniel Knukel and Fireman George Boyer i both of Bellefontaine, were badly in- I jured. A Brutal Murder. Harriman. Tenn.. June 9. —Saturday evening the wife of Jack Bailey, a well known farmer, was found dead at her house, having been brutally assaulted. An inquest by Justice Newport showed i strong suspicion that the crime was committed by George Robert, aged 14. a colored servant, wlfti was arrested. Covered With Mud. Fort DeFrance. SEEKING A WAY OUT Commissioner Wright Has a Conferance With President Mitchell of Miners' Union. AFTER OFFICIAL INFORMATION United States Commissioner of Labor Has Undertaken an Investigation of the Anthracite Miners’ Strike —An Important Conference. New York, June 10.—President John I Mitchell of the United Mine Workers' i union arrived here late yesterday asIternoon. he having been sent for by I Carroll D. Wright. United States comi •nissioner of labor, who is here investigating the anthracite coal miners I strike. Mr. Mitchell first called on Secretary Ralph M. Easley of the Nai t tonal Civic Federation, and the two ; last night went to the Manhattan hotel. where Mr. Wright is stopping. President Mitchell went to the comi missioner's room, where he remained |in conference with Mr. Wright for two > hours. When Ire left Mr. Mitchell 1 said: ”1 have but little to say further than i that I have talked with Commissioner Wright and have explained to him the ■ situation from the miners’ standpoint | I and have told him of the causes which I lied up to the strike.” "Was there any suggestion of a set•tlement made during the interview?” ; President Mitchell was asked. Charleston. W. Va.. June 10. —The i strike situation is about the same here. All the miners in Kanawha. Montgomery and Handley fields are out The New river field is completely tied up. Reports from Winifrede. Cabin Creek i and Carbon are that all the men are working. The Kanawha and Hocking I Syndicate have their regular forces at I work at Big Mountain. Monarch and Kelly’s Creek. These include the bigI gest forces of men in this section. The Chesapeake Mining company had a few men at work and got out coal enough for the locomotives and at the Marmet, just above here, all were at work. There were no reports from Elk River. The miners from there were out for a circus yesterday, and the operators say there is no talk of strike there. Various reports of the organizers of the United Mine Workers are heard, but cannot be confirmed. ( Awaiting Final Surrender. Pretoria. June 6. —All the British ! columns have been ordered to “stand fast" until the surrenders of the Boers 1 are completed. There Were No More Complaints. On the day that the inspectors brought in the returns and asked the two old commissioners how they had always done in letting roads where there were more than one road voted at the same election, they said that thev had always built the one that sold the lowest under the estimate: and this proposition was understood and the inspectors said that they would be satisfied with the decision of the commissioners and let the selling of the road decide which should be built first, I can say to the taxpayers on the next side of the township, although dissatisfied that you should look at the matter with honesty and right: and I think you will not blame us in contracting for the Woods road. Niagara Falls 11:15 a. tn. 14-3 Not manv weeks ago the newspapers published accounts of mysterous whole sale robberies on one of the ocean greyhounds plying between New York City and Liverpool. The authorities on board ship exerted themselves to their utmost, but no clew to the offenders could be obtained. Stateroom after state room was entered, and in nearly every case some valuable Jewels were abstracted. Scotland Yard detectives were summoned, but the most astute thief catchers of that celebrated agency failed to meet with any success. Later developments however, have thrown some light on the mystery. On board and receiving the constant attention of a lady and gentlem in passengers was a fine large group of ostriches, consigned to one J. H. Percival, Paris, France. The lady and gentleman, it seems, after the steamer landed, disappeared, as did also the flock of feathered beauties. All trace of the birds was lost, until the other day, when thev were unloaded at the Plant System dock. The tag, however, had been changed and me of the birds was missing. It turned out to be a most valuable bird, however, and the discovery was the work of a New York sleuth hound. , On every visit to the hold of the i steamer by the aforesaid lady and gentleman this particular ostrich was fed a jewel watch, diamond ring or some other valuable articles--pur-loined by this couple from the state rooms of their fellow passengers. This particular ostrich seemed to feast on jewelry. Be that as it may, the birel’s feathers now adorn some Parisian, and the contents of his stomach await identification in the office of Chief Devery, in New York City. The lady and gentleman are in the hands of the Paris police who arrested them as thev were about to sail fur America, after having reshipped the ostriches to NewYork. Having no reason to detain the birds and as the real culprits had been sacrificed on'the other side, »he society for prevention to crueltv to animals sold them to the agent of the great John Robinson circus which will exhibit at Decatur, June 18.
