A CITY DESTROYED The Volcano Pplpp On the Island of Martinique Engulfs St. Pierre. THIRTY THOUSAND LIVES LOST Not Since the Days of Pompeii His Such a Horror Overtaken a Lively and Teeming City — Destruction Complete in a Moment's Time. Fort DeFrance. Island of Martinique, May 13. —It now seems to be generally admitted that about 30,000 persons lost their lives as the result of the outbreak of the Mont Pelee volcano at St. Pierre on Thursday last. Careful investigation by competent government officials show that the earlier reports were accurate. Briefly put, last Thursday morning the city of St. Pierre disappeared within 10 minutes in a whirling fire vomited from Mont Pelee, 30,000 persons were instantly and horribly killed, ana the volcano whose ancient crater for more than 50 years had been occupied by a quiet lake, became a torrent cf fiery mu I which rolled toward the sea, engulfing everything before it Then the last of cable communication was broken and the doomed city waisolated from the world. The American consul at Guadeloupe, Louis Ayme, has reached the desolate spot where St. Pierre stood and confirms the awful story in all its essential details. From an interview with Colonel Ayme. who is a trained American newspaper man the following facts were learned: Thursday morning the inhabitants of the city awoke to find heavy clouds shrouding the Mont Pelee crater.. All day Wednesday horrid detonations had been heard. These were echoed from St. Thomas on the north to Barbadoes on the south. The cannonading ceased on Wednesday night and fine ashes fell like rain on St. Pierre. The inhabitants were alarmed, but Governor Mouttet, who had arrived at St. Pierre the evening before, did everything possible to allay the panic. The British etc amer Rooralmma arrived at St. Pierre on Thursday with lo passengers. They were watching the rain of ashes when, with a frightful roar and terrific electric discharges. a cyclone of fire, mud and steam swept down from the crater over town and bay. sweeping all before it and destroying the fleet 6f vessels at anchor off the shore. There the accounts of the catastrophe so far obtainable cease. Thirty thousand corpses are strewn "bout, buried in the ruins of St. Pierre, cr else floating, gnawed by sharks, in the surrounding seas. The island with its lofty hiffs is hidden behind a huge veil of violet or leaden colored haze. Enormous quantities of the wreckage of large and small ships and houses strew the surface of the sea. Huge trees and too often bodies, with flocks of sea-gulls soaring above and hideous sharks fighting about them, are floating here and there. From behind the volcanic veil come blasts of hot wind mingled with others Ice cold. The whole north end of the island is covered with a silver gray coating of Mhos resembling dirty snow. The city of St. Pierro stretched nearly two miles along the-water front and half a mile back to a cliff at the base of the volcano. The houses of the richer French families were built of stone. The still smoking volcano towers above the ash-covered hills. The ruins are burning In many places and frightful odors of burned flesh fill the air. Not one house is left intact. Viscid heaps of mud, ashes and tolcanic stones are seen on every side. The streets can hardly be traced. Here and there amid the ruins are heaps of corpses. Almost all the faces are downward. In one corner 22 bodies of men, women and children wore mingled in 'one awful mass, arms and legs protruding as th" hapless beings fell in the last struggles of death's agony. Through the middle of the old Place
Berlin ran a tiny stream, the remains of -lie River Gayave. Great trees with roots upward and scorched by fire, are strewn in every direction. Huge blocks and still hot stones ar? scattered about. From under one large stone the arm of a white woman protruded. Most notable was the utter silence and the awful, overpowering - ench from the thousands of dead. Careful inspection showed that the fiery stream which so completely destroyed St. Pierre must have been composed of poisonous gases, which instantly suffocated everyone who inLaled them and of other gases burning furiously, for nearly all the victims had their hands covering their mouths or were in some other attitude showing that they had sought relief from suffocation. All the bodies were carbonized or roasted. A. G. Austin, the manager of the Colonial bank at Barbadoes. landed at St. Pierre with a party from the British royal mail steamer Solent. He found the bank clock stopped at some minutes befoie 8 o'clock. A horse and buggy and a policeman were in a dead group at the ’oor. The coast villages near St. Pierre were destroyed simultaneously with that town. The entire island up to within a few miles of Fort IDeFranc" is covered with mud and ashes. The cattle of the Island are either all dead or dying. The streams have dried up or are polluted. Thousands of persons are flocking to Fort DeFrance. L'nless relief is promptly sent famine is imminent, and there is urgent need for the serv'ces of the Red Cross society Terror In St. Vincent. Roseau. Island of Dominica. B. W. L, May J 3 —Ti c Soufriere volcano on the Island of St. Vincent has been in full eruption sirce Wednesday last. Several plantat’ons have been destroyed. Earthquakes and loud reports accompanied tho eruption and stones and ashes fell a. Kingston. Many persons were wounded and the bodies of 500 dead are unburied. Barbadoes. C 6 nples off. was in total darkness for a time. Pebbles and gritty substances have fallen there. Canoes crowded with refugecF are arriving at Dominica and their occupants are most hospitably received. A Roaring Inferno. Kingston. Jamaica. May 10. —Th? first intimation of a disaster at Martinique was the breaking of the cables on Tuesday. The French cable at Martinique from Puerto Plata was broken Wednesday. Cable communication with all the northern islands is stopped. The survivors of the Britisr steamer Roddam descrilte the scene n* St. Pierre as being "glimpses of hdi." beggaring description. The Roraima was wrecked in a terrible upheaval of land and sea. The whole crew perished. Two ships were lost with ail on board in an attempt to approach Martinique. Widespread Destruction. Paris. May 12. —It 1s believed from the official information received here from the Island of Martinique that the disaster surpasses all that imagination can conceive. The whole northeastern portion of the island Is laid waste. Three large communities, exclusive of St. Pierre, have been destroyed. All the hills surrounding I.e Carbet and Le Precheur (near St. Pierre) are covered with refugees to the number of about 5,fi00. who are being taken away gradually. In the meanwhile provisions are being conveyed to them. How Ir Happened. London, May 10. —Prof. John Milne, the seismologist, declares that his seismic instruments have recorded no disturbance and that they would almost inevitably have done so had serious earthquakes occurred. Prof. Milne’s theory is that Mont Pelee “has blown its head off" owing to the Infiltration of water through the rocks until it reached the molten material beneath, forming steam of tremendous pressure, when something had to give way. ♦ 1 “We must economize,” he said peremptorily. “I’m so glad!” his wife exclaimed. “You take the announcement more good naturetlly than usual. "Yes; It’s pleasant to hear you use the plural pronoun. Ordinarily, when there is any economizing needed, you expect me to do Jt all.”
