UNCLE SAM’S SPOTTERS. Especially the Man In Europe Who Looks Ont For Smttgglera. “fncle Sam’s large ami well organized secret service," says S. IT. Adams in Ainslee's. “is made up mostly of men who come properly tinder the head of detectives with police powers, but it has its class of bona fide spotters, whose entire duty it is to ingratiate themselves with persons suspected of having designs to evade the custom house duties and to warn tjie baggage inspectors at this end of the impending swindle. “In cleverness, address and adapta bility the secret service spotter is easl ly at the head of his profession and even ranks with the trained experts of the European diplomatic corps. It is essential that he should be a man of the world, for he must associate with all kinds of jioople on'equal terms. He has no fixed abode, but lives in various European capitals when he is not on shipboard, where he i ■ much of the time. He must never let himself be in the slightest degree suspected. “There is always a number of these agents in Paris, because of the great American trade there. They live at the fashionable hotels and live the life apparently of flaneurs and boulevar diers. In al! lines of trade that concern dutiable goods they are experts, and no large purchase by an American in Paris is unknown them. Their cir cle of acquaintance is enormous, but nobody knows them for what they are. In one way or another they contrive to make the acquaintance of any person w hom they suspect and unostentatiously but unremittingly trail him. “Many a time some man who has made a heavy purchase of diamonds or laces and so disposed them that he felt sure of being able to get them through the port undiscovered has been passed on the dock by a chance acquaintance of the voyage over who. nnseen. presses n little mite into the hand of the customs inspector. That note tells all that the wily smuggler would wish to keep secret, and his baggage Is mercilessly ransacked until the hidden articles are brought to light. He has Issm followed over by the spotter. Men employed in this line got good pay—ns bljfh as $lO a-day—-but it costs them much to live in the manner in which they must maintain themselves.” Mnuuy Kuomn. It Is said to be true that in all hospitals those rooms facing the sun have fewer deaths, other things being equal, than those which nre on the shady side of the house. Likewise statistics, when they have been kept, prove that the average time for a recovery Is much less in a sunny room than In a shady one. From these facts and from the fact that the tendency toward illness has proved greater on. the shady side of buildings, like prisons and asylums. It follows that light Is second only In Importance to fresh air. A dark room Is nearly but not quite so bad ns a dose room. In the case of slckni'ss the sickroom should be the sunniest one the bouse affords.

Fill your mouth with water and then stuff. \ou can smell a fire on the next street. Doctors put this plan in practice when called to a case of poisoning from prussic acid, for the only way to detect this highly poisonous matter in the body is by the sense of smell. O. j Under this arrangement the Pennsylvania lines west of Pittsburg will route all their Pan-American Exposition business to Buffalo over their own rails to Akron, 0., thence via the Erie railroad from Akron to Buffalo. This will not only include the business tor Buffalo proper, but business to New York and the East via Buffalo, and the Erie will route the business origi nating at Buffalo ou account of the Pan-American Exposition to and via St. Louis and Louisville, over the same route, and will alsodirect the business from New York and other (“astern points to the West, South and Southwest. via Buffalo and the new lines. By the establishment of this service, the Pennsylvania lines west of Pittsburg secure a direct outlet for the PanAmerican business, while itaffordsthe Erie an apportunity to successfully compete for business to the West and Southwest via both St. Louis and Louisville. The importance of this arrangement will lie recognized when it is understood that stop-over privileges will be permitted at Buffalo during the Pan-American Exposition on all tickets reading via that point. Another attractive feature of the route will be the privilege of stop over at Chautauqua Lake, a privilege afforded by only the new line.
