Ky„ place the shortage of Erank M. Brown, the missing assistant cashier and individual bookkeeper, at $191,500. According to reports from those who were with Brown when lie left last Tuesday night, he had less than SSOO with him. Investigation shows that Brown spent the money as fast as he got it, mostly on races, cards and women. He was known as a plunger J ears in betting and the names of four women are published whoseapartments lie is said to have furnished and maintained in the most lavish manner. One of these women, the one that became jealous and gave him away to the bank officials, has disappeared and her whereabouts can not be learned. Brown’s salary was onlv $1.,00 per year. Cases are now cited where he spent more than that amount n one day. II is bond was for SIO,OOO and it is go-d as far as it goes. Gone to Canada. Fort Wayne. Nov. 20.—Fred J. Stone, a • incinnati traveling man. who is in this city, says that Frank Brown, the defaulting cashier of the German National bank at Newport. Ky., is. in Canada. Stone is a friend of Brown’s, and says that the latter after leaving Newport, went to St. Louis, where he shaved off his mustache and otherwise altered his appearance and left for Canada. He passed through Indiana on a Big Four train early yesterday morning. Stone was witli Brown at Winchester, Ind. HOLOCAUST IN HOTEL Four Persons Burned to Death In a Pennsylvania Village Fire. Oswayo, Pa.. Nov. 19.—Four men were burned to death in a tire which destroyed the McGonigal House, a 3story frame building, the hotel barn and the operahouse here yesterday. The three buildings were burned to the ground in half an hour from the time the tire started. yw Churches At War, New York. Nov. 20. —Two fierce onslaughts on the Church of Rome enlivened the proceedings at yesterday's session of the general missionary commission. On each occasion an audience which tilled every part of the large auditorium in St. Paul’s M. E. church, where the committee is meeting, broke into applause and no effort was made by the chair to check these demonstrations of approval. Charges Against a Preacher. Omaha. Nov. 20.—Rev. Francis Hermans. who had charge of a Swedish church at Salt Lake live years ago. has been traced to this city. Hermans, who lived here before going to Salt Lake, is charged with killing two young women who were members of his household in tills city. His wife is also accused of having burned the bodies of liis alleged victims in a furnace. Corn Above the Average. Washington. Nov. It;.—The preliminary estimate of the average yield, per acre, in corn in 1900, as published in the forthcoming monthly report of the statistician of the department of agriculture. is 25.3 bushels, as compared with an average yield of 25.31 bushels in 1599, of 24.76 bushels in 1898 and a 10-year average of 24.10 bushels.
