Harvey Lee, of near Bobo, was in our community a few days ago on business. Ed Spangler and wife of Preble, were guests of Howard Shackley and family, Sunday. Rev. S. C. Cramer of Logansport is visiting his parents and relatives in this community. Mrs. Anna Broadbeck and children visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Cramer, the latter part of last week. It is reported that James Knavel, of Pleasant Mills, will move on his property in this community this week. French Township. The schools in this township will close next week. Jack Reynold’s hogs are dying with the cholera. Alfred Debrot moved into the old Zimmerman property. Jacob Neaderhouser and John Huser are building new barns. Rev. Souder Os Allen county, preached to the Defenseless Mennonites last Sunday. Joe Ruff has resigned as supervisor and Levi Meshberger was appointed in his place. Sealed bids were opened Friday, April 6, I‘.K)O, at the office of Trustee John P. Steiner, to let the contract for the construction of a brick school house to be built in Dist. No. 4. The bidders were Abraham Boegli of Berne, Hoffmann & Liddy of LinnGroveand Burk & Aspy of Geneva. The bids were as follows: Abraham Boegli, 81.475; Hoffmann & Liddy, §1,550; Burk & Aspy, §1,575. Abraham Boegli being the lowest bidder, the contract was let to him. Pleasant Mills Work is progressing rapidly at the stone quarry. Mrs. McCullough will close her school Friday. Mrs. D. Vornholt and family and Miss Efeler were called to the .bedside of Mrs. Vornholt’s sick sister. ‘ Mr. Vornholt will return Saturday. At a meeting of the Reformed church last Friday, Rev. Lehman was elected trustee, Fred Ellenberger, elder, and Jerr Ruff, deacon. David Moser and Miss Barbara Lehman were united in,marriage at the bride’s residence, Monday afternoon, by Rev. Sam Sprunger. Only the near relatives and friends witnessed the ceremony. They will reside in the bride’s residence. The groom is the senior member of the firm of Moser & Williman. Emil Lichty is again a resident of our town, having moved into the property recently purchased by Isaac Falb. Thomas Parks of Bluffton, is filling Lorenzo Dunbar’s place in the trim shop while the latter is on duty as assessor. John Meschberger accompanied his wife to Fort Wayne on Monday where Mrs. AL is undergoing surgical treatment at the Hope hospital. Rev. J. H. Rilling of Illinois, has been assigned the labors of the Newville circuit of the Evangelical Association. which includes the church at Linn Grove. On Monday morning at an early hour occurred the death of Martha, wife of Christian Blocher, at their home near Domestic. On Thursday of last week their infant babe also died. Scheimann & Butler shipped a car load of hogs to Cleveland, Ohio, Wednesday. Wm. Selby of Hoagland, was here Monday and Tuesday loading timber for a Sheldon firm. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Moyer of Laketon, were guests of J. L. Ferry and wife a few days last week. David Werling shipped two car loads of lumber to Liverpool, England, last Wednesday. Mrs. Eckrote of Vera Cruz, was the guest of her brother, Jeff Klopfenstein and family last Sunday. The Indiana Pipe Line Co., had a gang of men here last week changing the gas line from the boiler house to the tanks.
The Indiam Pipe Line Co. are burning coal instead of gas at their pumping station here, owing to. the
increased production of oil they had to use the gas line for oil. C. W. McKibbon, electrician for the Indiana Pipe Line Co., of Lima, Ohio, was here last week making some changes and remodeling the electric light plant at the oil station. Monroe. Dr. Rainier and Alon are on the mend. Mr. Gillium made a trip to Portland last week. L. A. Thotnos is preparing to move to Decatur. Jacob Trim is moving on the Thomas farm. M. F. Brandyberry has accepted a position on the road. The new hardware store is now open and ready for business. Daniel Urick is slowly recovering from a bad case of barber’s itch and other difficulties. Oliver Bill No. 2, did not go to Portland to work. He was on the sick list a few days. Jackson street is on the boom, building a new sidewalk out of nice new inspected saw dust. Our new wide-awake postmaster still has his daily smile, and hands out the mail with both hands. Our graded room of school looks very slim this week, most of the boys have quit and gone to ditching and making garden. Mr. Haggard has his new house almost completed, and has received his insurance from the Continnental Co., in full for his loss. Dr. Parrish was called to Berne last week to assist Dr. Wilson to extricate an eye from a youg man which was a very severe operation. Dan Knofsinger’s baby is dangerously sick with lung fever, also the childdren of Henry Haggard and Thomas Oliver are very sick. H. H. Hocker delivered a very fine address to the young converts of Alonroe last Sunday evening. However, there was a large crowd present, both old and young. We noticed in last week’s paper a sketch saying that Jacob Alartz was foud dead in bed, which is untrue. A doctor was summoned before his death and was present when he passed away. The protracted effort has closed with quite a goodly number of new members, and a good many who will be of quite a benefit to the church in many different ways, both spiritually and financially. Amen to the good work. H' C. Andrews has been successful in capturing three of our horse fakers, for which a collection was taken up to defray expenses. And now we have started a plan in which to form a protective association, each member, or each who wish to become a member, pay in the sum of one dollar to the treasurer, and when any member has anything stolen then we will assess each member to such amount as being equal to or enough to pay the expense of capturing the thief, and we already have quite a list who wish to become members.
