A Letter From The Philippines. San Fable. Philippine Isles. Feb. 25,1900. Dear folks. I have not received any mail from you since the middle of December, but I will just keep on writing anyway, as I may not hear from you for si me time. Today is Sunday and I am on guard at an out post, although I do not have to be at the post until night. The corporals take the men out and theu come back to camp until night. Me have not had any fighting to speak of for a couple of weeks, although we have had two or three hard marches. Day before vesterday our company and company I C went on a scouting expedition to the mountains. They run upon a band of Negroes who had four Americin soldiers and one teamster prisen- | ers. One man belonged to company Kof our regiment and was captured about a month ago. One belonded to the 45th regiment and two tothe 30th. They report very rough treatment in every way and shape. I think most of the fighting is over. The natives are coming back to thedeserted towns and some are going into business again. As to us staying here I don't know how long that will be. M’e may not leave this town until after the rainy season is over, and again we may leave at a few hours notice. M e now have a sale commisary here and
' can get canned fruit, tobacco and ’ such things. Sickness is not quite as i bad as it was when I wrote before. | Most of the sickness is fever, chills and stomach trouble. Still there has i not been very many died with these. ■ Next Sundav is my birthday. I do ' not know what I will have for dinner. ; but I have about three dollars left ‘ from last month's par. so I guess I'il I get the best I can at the commisary. i I suppose there is lots of snow there i now. but bv the time my letter gets I there it will be spring. I will close I for the present. Your son. Burton Fuller. Co. D. 39th Reg't. U. S. V. In sureness and variety of attrac- ; tion. it would be hard to surpass MeI Clure's Magazine for April.
