Steiner was yesterday ap|pointed trustee of French township bv Auditor Mangold, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of C. E. Stuckey. Mr. Steiner is one of the best known and most prosperous farmers of the county and will make an able and efficient officer. Mr. Stuckeys resignation was due to the fact that he will soon remove to Alonroe township where he has purchased a farm.

How Hopper was Side Tracked at opera house Feb. 28. The fourth number of the Lecture Course at Bosse’s opera house tonight. The cheapest articles ever sold in Decatur is the watch at Hensleys this month. 49-6 w Mrs. H. C. Duckett, is still quite ill, and the improvement in her condition if any, is slight. Fred Mayer is still agent for Coin’s famous book. Leave your order at this office at once. Every democrat should read it. Dr. A. L. DeVilbiss is again on duty, after a severe illness of several days, during which time he was wrestling with the grip demon. A surprise on Sylvester Spangler on account of his fifty-eighth birthday was among the order of events Monday evening, and was nicely planned and executed. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Schirmeyer entertained a few friends at their elegant home on Mercer street Monday evening. Cards and refreshments were served in an informal manner and a genuine good time participated in. Clem Macklin, T. P. Hollingsworth and several other Genevaites were here Monday, expecting to testify in the case of state vs Butcher & Bricker which was venued here from Jay county and sot down fortrial Monday. The case was continued. Cards are out announcing that Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Thomas and Mrs. Jessie Townsend will entertain at a 6 o’clock dinner to be given at the Allison homestead on Adams street Friday evening. A large number are invited and the affair promises to an elegant and enjoyable one. The Midway Oil company of Bluffton in which W. A. Kunkle, R. F. Cummins, Dr. Cook and two others are interested, just sold some of their property and leases, which netted them fully SIO,OOO each. They had owned the property but a few months, and sold it for s?t>7,ooo. Such is the fate of some prospectors. Mr. and Mrs. Peter P. Ashbaucher entertained a party of their young friends at dinner last Sunday and not Only a splendid repast but an excellent time is spoken of. Among the guests were Misses Della Harruff, Mary Gilliam, Emma Ershtnan. Hattie Gilliam, Engle and Mr. and Mrs, C. D. Lewton. Mrs. Mary Krick, a well known lady of Union township, died at her home Saturday evening as the result of a complication of diseases. Funeral services were conducted from the home Monday afternoon. She was a sister-in-law of John H. Lenhart of this city, and was quite well known here.
Mrs. Samuel Kunkle of Monmouth, has been very sick for several days. Hon. J. Fred France of Huntington, attended to legal business here yesterday. Jule Walters in How Hopper was Side Tracked at the opera house Feb. 28. Two freight cars on the Erie railway were derailed Tuesday morning and caused a delay of an hour to get the track cleared. They expect to be entirely ready for business by a week from today. W. H. Ernst and Clem Kain, of Bluffton, are going through the records during D. P. Bold’s term as treasurer, with a view of getting evidence in the state case which will come up in the Wells circuit court at the April term. The experts are doing the work at the instigation of the ex-treasurer.

Neuensyhwander, E. B. Haefiing, Peter Kirsch C. F. Beibenck, Clem Macklin, Frank Pontius, A. Lehman. John Tague, Fred Eickhoff, Charles Keiss and Oscar Shaw. A letter from W. P. Porter of Pleasant Mills, tells of a pleasnt trip to Washington, D. C., where that gentleman spent several w'eeks observing the modes of law making and visiting the various departments. He speaks in glowing terms of the library building. the finest structure in the United States, and perhaps the world. The weather he savs, was warm and trees already budding. Before he made the trip Mr. Porter went to Fort Wayne, where his old health and vigor were revived by a treatment under Dr. Miles.

Sister Emma Van Camp, a member of Olive Rebekah Lodge No. 86, Decatur, Indiana, after a long and painful illness, peacefully sank to rest February 6, 1900, aged 39 years, 9 months and 24 days. She united with this branch of the order September 13.1898. Although she was not permitted to meet with us often on account of sickness, she loved the order. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn their loss. Resolved, That the order extends their heartfelt sympathy to the family in their sad bereavement. Resolved, That as a mark of respect to the memory of our sister, the charter be draped in mourning for thirty days and that a copy of these resolutions be published and also sent to the family.
