Italy. Saturday aftero-xn we dr re out the Appian Wav. that famous old Raman read, the end of which we saw at Brindisi the ancient Brundtisiun'. a few days age. Once the Wav was lined with magnificent tombs. Lot n w onir ruins and fragments rema;'. The curixis round tomb of Cecilia MeteEa and the tomb of Cicer: were the most interesting rains. Thechurch . f St. .Sebastian is n this road i few miles from Rome, and from that place tne catacombs, the famous burying place of the early Christians, is entered. Just after we left the city it began to rain. We thought it would prove to be a shower and instead of doting the carriage we opened cur umbrellas. A sodden gust of wind caught Mrs. A’s. umbrella and almost wrenched it from her band. But it was rent from top to bottom and turn ed wrong side out. That faithfi. umbrella which she had th ought tc lav awav at home as a relic of her trip in "Palestine. The shower soon passed, the clouds cleared away and the sun shewn again .n the bliItalian sky. Whew we g-X utbey nd the shelter of the city walls the wind was like that of a raw March day at home. We left the Appian Way and drove down a road crossing the eampagna. • the green fields suit: id ling the city and visited s»sm-e ind-r gr und tom: - beautifully decorated with mosaics. The totnbs of the Valerian family were the best preserved and most beautiful in decorative design. In all the tombs the decorations were of a cheerful nature —fiuit. flowers, birds and cheru’os. The lights we earned showed that they retained their original colors. Driving back to the city on the Appian Way. we stopped at the Quo Vadis church, a tiny church three miles beyitii the city gate. You . remember hew the story is told in Sienkiewicz’ novel. ’"Que Vadis." that at the time of the first great persecution of the Christians, the incident occurred which is here commemmorated. After the earnest request of his Christian friends that his life should be pri-li because he - -jsefui in the Lore - work. St. Peter left the city. Walking along the Appian Way. the Lord met him in toe road, an I inquired “Quo Vadi- ' — < •■Where goes- tnouT” St. Peter understood the re: ike. returned to Rome and later bravely suffered martyrdom. The church is built on the reputed spot where the Lord met St. Peter.

But we were dooc.ed to disappointment fcr she did not come and the crowd gradually melted away. It was a raw. cold afternoon and she was more sensible to stay at heme than we to try to see her. Bat we saw all lasses of people and enjoyed a fine view of the city. The hill is high abov- the ' city and we could pick oct the different domes and towers, public buildings. palaces and streets. S: we felt repaid for coming. The rest f our friends joined us there and later we all strolled down the hil-tide. acros th- Piazza del Popo'o into the Corse and back to our hotel. After dinner we all spent the evening together in the drawing room, said our reluctant good byes and parted, probably v: never me--t aga.it. for at an early hour Mondav morning our friends left for their Loroes in England. In toe same way the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican is not open to the public this week. We saw it last week and thus had a look at those wonderful frescoes of Miche l Angela and other o*l masters. In the great art galleries cf the Vat. -an we have seen the masterpieces cf the world of art on canvas and in stone. In the immense library, rich in books and rare manuscripts, are preserved hundreds of the most beautiful objects of art and virtu, whk-h have been presented to the various Pipes by devout Catholics or admiring sovereigns, in all parts of th** world, and during several centuries. Thev consist of manuscripts, beautifully illuminated addresses of admiration and respect, petitions and thanksgivings. Seme cd the manuscripts are ornamented with jewels. Then there are clocks, cabinets, picture frames, jewel cases, tables with mosaic or jeweled tops and richly carved legs, and other object, all of the finest workmanship, blazioned with jewels and of great value. The vases were of all sizes and designs up to the rich vases of Seversware. three feet high, presented by Napoleon 111.
