The large stock sale of Elmer Johnson took place according to advertised announcement Tuesday. It was just what it purported to be, the largest sale in this part of the universe. Two or three thousand poople took his place by storm and among them bought $3,565.80 worth of stock and farming implements. The sale was in every wav a success. It has become pretty self evident that Elmer never does anything by halves, and this sale was a further illustration that he knows a thing or two. Mr. Johnson and familywill immediately move to this city and next Wednesday he will assume the duties of clerk of the Adams circuit court, to which office he has long since been elected. Tomorrow is Arbor and Bird day in Indiana, having been so designated by Governor Mount in a recent proclamation and the same will be appropriately celebrated over the state. In many of the schools of thiscounty prograins consisting of recitations, songs, essays, etc., have been arranged, while during a recess a number of trees will be planted. Discussions as to the preserving of trees and the protection of the birds will also be in order. This is only the beginning of the celebration of such days which will within a few years become verypopular. While many of our schools observed the day, it was not as general as it should have been and every school in the county should arrange to do so next year John S. Bowers, manager of the Logansport andi Wabash Valley Gas Co., at ‘ Decatur, arrived here this morning accompanied by thirty-one citizens of Decatur on their way to the gas field. A Review reporter talked with Manager Bowers who explained that some time ago in order to give his patrons better service, he was obliged to shut off from all boilers including the waterworks boiler at Decatur. The council of the city retaliated by imposing an extra assessment of S2OO per mile on their pipe lines within the city. Bowers claimed that in 1895 he was able to supply Decatur with 6 wells; in 1896 it took 9 wells; in 1897 it took 12 wells and now he is using 18 wells and was drilling 8 more to assist in the winter’s supply. During this time he has also had to put in pump stations and has had to buy this fall new boilers and pumps. He has asked no advance in the price during all this time and thinks his company has not been used right by the city. The thirtyone representative business men were on their wav to the pump station on the Jacob Taylor farm in Knox township and from there will make a tour of the gas field and examine conditions. This gas company pay taxes in Jay county on $24,131.16 worth of property. On $45,219.18 worth in Adams,' and on $10,238.42 worth in Blackford. The entire number were driven out by the Sturgeon Brothers. — Portland Review.
