CUBAN OUTRAGES Against Spaniards Have Greatly Increased In the Past Few Days. Havana, Oct. 14.—Outrages against Spaniards have increased greatly within ■ the past 10 days in many of the near-by i districts, and this fact the Diaro de La Marina attributes to Mayor Laeoste’s flag order, which, the paper says, has unquestionably had the effect of rousIng bitter feelings between the races which, though they formerly existed, were smothered. the Diario adds that the release of Young Sanguilly and his friends without punishment, and Young Sanguilly’s appointment as a census enumerator immediately after he was set at liberty, looks like official approbation of his act. Even the La Lucha bitterly condemns the policy of giviug positions to men who apparently obtained their places through making themselves objectionable. Further troubles have occurred since the issueance of Mayor Loscostes’ order between the Spanish and Cuban employes of the Havana Commercial company, which controls a large number of tobacco factories, and application will be made for protection to the United States troops. QUARREL - Ends In a Fatal Shootjng at a Cincinnati Pjiini'.jy Election. Cincinnati, (sci. 17. —- A shooting, which will prove fatal, occurred yesterday in an “Over-the-Rhine” precinct of the Republican primaries. The victim was George C. Henuekes, an assistant marketmaster, and the man who shot him was Fred J. Goetz, a rodman in the engineer's office. Goetz challenged Hennekes’ vote at the primary. A quarrel followed that terminated in tho tragedy. Bad blood existed as Hennekes had beaten Goetz last year in a contest for election as a delegate from their common precinct. Goetz has been arrested. FIGHT AT ANGELES Filipinos Attack the City, Killing One American. Manila, Oct. 17. — The insurgents made an attack upon Angeles yesterday morning.; One American was killed and seven were wounded. The Filipinos used artillery, a few shells exploding. The Seventeenth, Ninth and Thirteenth regiments engaged the enemy, who retired after three hours’ fighting. An American scouting party near Balinate captured 11 Filipinos. Another near Maycauyou captured a Filipino major. All were brought to Manila. WOMAN’S VENGEANCE Mrs. Ta uro Shoots the Man Who Killed Her Husband. Niles, O , Oct. 16. —Frank Augusta was shot and killed last evening in the Italian quarter by Mrs. Tauro, who was arrested and lodged in jail at Warren. About four months ago Dominick Tauro was fatally stabbed in a fight and on his deathbed told his wife that Augusta had stabbed him. The shooting of Augusta is the sequel. Mrs. Tauro has a 5 months’ old baby which she took to jail with her. LORENZO DOW DEAD Was a Miner, Lawyer and Manufacturer During His Life. New York, Oct. 14.—Lorenzo Dow is dead at his home in this city, aged 72 years. During his long life he was a gold and silver miner, inventor and manufacturer and a lawyer, having sat on the supreme bench of Kansas and was the first mayor of Topeka, Kan. He was also engaged at one time in the exportation of mahogany from South America. LONG SENTENCE John Donovan Dean Goes to the Penitentiary For Murder. Detroit, Oct. 14. — John Donovan Dean was found guilty of manslaughter in the recorder’s court yesterday and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the state penitentiary at Jackson. On April 18 he killed his wife, during a quarrel, with a flatiron. The couple had not been living together for some time. Threatened Lynching. Columbia, Tenn., Oct. 16.—Horace Campbell, a negro phosphate miner, is in jail here and a strong guard stood watch last night to prevent a threatened lynching. Campbell and another negro resisted arrest at the Tennessee Phosphate company’s mines yesterday, opening fire on the officers, James Gilmer, B. L. Ladd and W. L. Wilshire. Gilmer was killed and Ladd wounded twice in the thigh, and the negroes fled. Later Campbell was arrested and identified. I,ate Senator Harlan's Estate. Mount Pleasant, la., Oct. 14.— Mrs. Robert T. Lincoln of Chicago, wife of the former minister to the court of St. James, has been appointed the administratrix of the estate of her father, the late Senator James Harlan. The estate of the aged statesman was surprisingly smodh amounting to less than $50,000. | All of it will fall to Mrs. Lincoln, his only heir. Consul Macrurn Cut Off. Washington, Oct. 17.-The state department has been informed by the cable companies that telegraphic communication with the Transvaal has been completely interrupted. The de-, partment is thus cut off from communication with United States Consul Macrum at Pretoria. Harrison at the Table of Honor. Mrs. William Strictler, residing near Willshire, Ohio, departed this life the l()th inst. Funeral took place last Thursday morning, at VX illshire M. E. church, conducted by Rev. H. Kohn assisted by Rev. P. B. Cupett. The “Beggar Prince” opera company played a three nights engagement at Bosse’s opera house this week to crowded houses, giving entire satisfaction at each performance. The company is an exceptionally strong one and will fill any opera house at popular prices. E. C. Ball, representative for the Scribner Book and Magazine company was in the citv Tuesday on his way to Van Wert, where he will proceed to interest the citizens in up-to-date literature. He has been at Portland during the past two weeks and succeeded in placing 127 sets of books. He is the same old man and whistles the same old tune.

I The Illinois Central is experimenting with an “automible car” that has a motor operated by gasoline.
