The Erwin boys are entertaining their brother, Dr. D. J. Erwin of Lake City, Michigan, who is here visiting relatives and resting from the trying strain of an extensive practice in medicine. Fred V. They will soon leave to join she former’s husband in Washington, where he has a very lucrative position in school work. A brother of Rev Kruse died at his home in Fort Wavne, after a short affliction with spinal trouble. The funeral will take piace from the home of the deceased, the time of which had not been announced in this city when this item of news was written. Bishop Andrews of this jurisdiction in Methodism has selected Rev. J. F. Stout of Red Wing, Minnesota, as pastor of Grace M. E. church, Kokomo where a vacancy exists on account of the death of Rev. E. T. Gregg. The new minister is said to possess a rare ministerial eloquence. Low Rate of Interest. Adams is home from Wisconsin at which place he is the possessor of large timber interests. He has been absent for several weeks. A. R. Bell and J. T. France with their wives left yesterday for Petoskev. Michigan, at which place they will proceed to resort in true Hoosier style. There will be no services at the I German Reformed church next Sunday on account of Rev. Kruse being absent, attending the funeral of his brother at Fort Wayne. B. J. Terveer and H. H. Bremerkamp were at Lafayette Sunday, joining an excursion out of Fort Wayne to that city. They report a pleasant trip and an enjovable time. ( Agnes Bluhm has began suit in the circuit court against Peter Mosser. the defendant being charged with bastardy. The latter is at liberty under a §SOO bond for his appearance in court.

Ramsey, who taught physics and chemstry in our high school here about four years ago has gradually advanced in his profession until at present, he fills one of the chairs of physics at Cornell University at Utica, New York. Marriage licenses have been issued this week to James T. Tyndall and Dasie D. Martz, Perrua M. Kimble and Matie B. Cook, Edward Liddy and Katie Nusbaum, Frank L. Smith and Rosella Sprunger, Hardleston K. Roe and Mary M. Lhamon. The residence of John Ehrman of Union township, was consumed by fire Tuesday. The family were absent with the exception of two small children, and they returned in time to save only a few of the household goods. The origin of the fire is unknown. John Smithley of Jefierson township threshed 1370 bushels of wheat which by the way is the largest yield reported this season. Mr. Smithley hails from old Jefferson township and is surely doing his part toward uphold the reputation of this important section of Adams county. Chauncey Hackenberry has paid his fine, been released from the Adams county jail and returned to his first love in Jefferson township. We mentioned last week of his fine and imprisonment for assault and battery. It is hoped he has repented and will hereafter lead a sober, industrious and honest life.

Recorder-elect Gallogly has moved his family here from Geneva, having purchased the John Stewart residence on north Railroad street. Residence four miles east of this city. Charles Ashville was here from Winchester Monday, doing the advertising act for the great and only Randolph county fair, which is due this year August 21-25. The attractions' this year are excellent and the prospects seem flattering for the best on the boards. The financial statement of the Old Adams County Bank looms up in this issue, and which shows their resources to figure the startling sum of $612,482.26. Bud Taylor, the third baseman for Place’s Creams, has joined his right class by signing with the Indians, who have been playing fast ball with our surrounding towns. At a game at Payne, Ohio, last Thursday in which Taylor’s playing was a prominent feature, the Indians got completely ‘■stuck” and signed him. It was a ten strike for Taylor.

Progress on the macadanized roads leading to this city is progressing at a very satisfactory pace, and long before the snow flies, the roads are expected to be completed and ready for traffic. So far, the work is up to the standard as set out in the plans and specifications, and this insures the fact that they will be among the best roads in the county. Dell Reynolds left last Friday night for Joplin, Missouri, where he will thoroughly inspect the prospects for gold mining, and if the chances are even will most likely try a hand at this short route to wealth. He has promised to write the Democrat of the outlook there which at the present time is attracting great armies of prospectors, some of whom are reported to have struck it rich. Bluffton’s base ball aggregation has gone up in a balloon and according to the latest reports it will not take the parachute route and return to earth any more this summer. It is good riddance for they play not, neither do they spin. The enthusiasts over there are having slight strokes of heart failure over the shortage in their bank accounts in keeping life into the game thus far. Miss Tillie C. Felbaun who was teacher of English in our city high school two or three years ago, has been elected principal of the Warsaw high school. Warsaw is one of the best cities in northern Indiana and Miss Felbaun is to be congratulated upon her success. She is an excellent teacher and her many friends here will be pleased to learn of her success.

The Evangelical congregation are remodeling their church. An addition is being built at the rear, a new cupalo added, the entrance changed to the north east corner, windows enlarged, and when completed will not have any resemblence to the old structure, that has stood the storm for several years. Besides afording more room it will be quite modern in appearance and style. Col. R. B. Allison came home from Oden. Michigan, Monday night, being called here by the annual election at the Old Adams bank, besides numerous other demands incident to the I erection and completion of the Alli- | son-Studabaker block, which by the | way has no equal in northern Indiana. , A united effort will be made to have it completed ready for occupancy by September 1. This office takes off their hat to William Hoagland who presented us with a half bushel of good eating apples, from which no bad effects are yet manifest. The more you eat the better they taste and under such a strain they will not last long. Mr, j Hoagland is one of those fortunate ' individuals who understands the i weakness of humanity including the direct route to the heart of a printer. The state board of health has asked all railroad companies doing business in Indiana to see that their employes are vaccinated and that there passenger cars are regularly cleaned and disinfected so as to lessen the liability of spreading smallpox contagion. Dr. Hurtv, secretary of the board, says he is fully convinced that the companies will obey the request. The order if issued will apply to trainmen, those who engage in handling baggage and in fact all employes who come in contact with the traveling public who have not already been vaccinated. If the companies heed the order thousands of railroad men will be going around with sore arms during the summer. Do you know it is a splendid thing to think that the woman you really love will never grow old to you?
