The auditor’s office completed an abstract of the mortgages exemption under the new law Tuesday. It shows that $415,000 were taken from the tax duplicate by this means. Several large sums were unearthed. They had been held by parties who failed to turn them in for taxtation, and had even placed the mortgages on record. Douglas of New York caused the arrest of a man who sold her Cripple Creek mine last year and sued for the purchase money, $5,000, on the ground that she had been buncoed into buying a worthless property. She lost her case, and now the ore being taken out of her mine runs from SIO,OOO to SIOO,OOO to the ton, and the vein is about eight feet wide. The automobile factory in Kokomo is receiving orders from every direction and far in excess and capacity, the proprietors, Haynes A Apperson. will therefore shortly enlarge their plant and prepare for the great increase of business which is ineviably coming. It should not be at all surprising if this should before many years become Kokomo’scheif industry. The horseless carriage has come to remain with us. The first student to enter Stanford University was a woman. Seven hundred and sixty-three women are students at the University of California during the term just ended. A story comes from Shelby county which illustrates what reckless competition will inspire men to do. Roy Norris bought a thresher’s outfit and started out to do work for six cents a bushel, doing everything, furnishing hands to haul the wheat and stack the straw, the farmer having nothing to do but haul the wheat to his granary. His enemies filled a sheaf of wheat with railroad spikes and in another was found dynamite enough to have blown the machine and all near it to pieces.
