Mrs. Frank Crill is spending this j week visiting relatives at Monroe and vicinity. Taking a fleet of war vessels through the Suez canal is a pretty expensive piece of work. The regular tolls are nine francs a ton for war vessels and ten francs for each passenger. Camara’s Spanish fleet foots up 40,000 tons and his force numbers 10.000. This would make the cost of taking the fleet and force through the canal 260,000 francs or $92,000. Among the supplies to be sent to the American soldiers in Cuba are 25,900 mosquito head nets, contracted for at twenty-five cents each. They are made of fine wire with frame to adjust to the shoulders; closing tight enough to keep the flies and mosquitoes out. The Spanish soldiers do not need contrivance the Americans will keep the flies and mosquitoes off of them. It is said of Napoleon Bonaparte that such was the majesty of his mein that men thought him tall when in reality he was but five feet twoinches. Had he lived today he would be ruled out of the U. S. army by the regulations. Lord Nelson would also be rejected. Thus two of the world's great heroes would have been doomed to other and perhaps less favorable pursuits. It is said the reason grass will not grow under the shade of a treeisoften because the soil is sour. It may be tested by burying a piece of blue litmus paper in the ground and letting it stay well covered for 15 or 20 minutes. If the ground is sour the blue paper will turn red. It may be sweetened by sprinkling fresh lime over it. Litmus paper can be found at any drug store. An item has been going the rounds of the newspapers that congress passed a law to the effect that after July Ist, 1898, women who marry soldiers now drawing pensions could not eome in for widow’s pensions of sl2 a month. We are informed there is no such a law and old soldiers can still make themselves attractive by holding out the government monthly allowances after they have shuffled off this mortal coil. A somewhat reckless youth is said to have enlisted for war and was spending his time in camp writing home for money. He finally sent this telegram as a clincher: “Father: Leg shot off in sham battle. Au exchange very ably puts the case as follows: Good advertising is the magnet which pulls trade. You may have just as good values as the other fellow, but if he tells the public about his ability to do better for them than anyone else, and you do not, he will get the trade. If you are newly established in business, no matter howmuch you deserve the patronage of the public, things won’t come your way very fast unless you tell the people why it is to their advantage to trade with you—tell them what sort of bargains you have to offer. Os the 500,000,000 people speaking the ten or twelve languages, 125,000,000, or one-fourth, speak the English. That the Standard Oil company does not overlook little things is evidenced in the fact that in balancing the books several days ago there was found yet due Mike Daly, of this city, two cents for oil purchased from him some time ago. The oil was taken from a well drilled on Mr. Daly’s property. Thejcompany generously forwarded to Mr. Daly a New York draft for two cents. Persons troubled with diarrhoea will be interested in the experience of Mr. W. M. Bush, clerk of Hotel Dorrance, Providence, R. I. A statistician has recently published in Paris what purports to be a horse census, and some of his figures just at this time, when the government is buying horses, are interesting. The Argentine Republic is third and Austro-Hungary and the German empire are tied for fourth place, with 3,5000,000 each. France is credited with 2,880,000 and the United Kingdom with 2,790,000. The expert says that England and France have the most valuable horses, with the United States and Canada ranking next. Beats the Klondike. Mr. A. C. The Sentinel is gratified to note that appeals have been taken from a number of tax assessments of corporations, including those of the daily papers of the city. There are unquestionably a number of corporations in the city whose property is assessed lower than the law provides some of them very much lower but we do not believe that this is true asto news papers. Many persons do not understand that the chief money value of a newspaper consists of its name and good will, which are not taxable. Anybody can start a newspaper at any time, and have all rights and franchises that any newspaper has.
But when a newspaper builds up a qusiness it acquires an additional value without any increase of property and this added value is of the same nature as that firm name and good will in any other business, which, of course, nobody thinks of taxing. We believe these appeals will have a beneficial effect in removing common misunderstandings of this subject.—lndianaoplis Sentinel. David Bixler has exhibited in his store a tooth of a mastodon found in Contonment creek Oklahoma, by Anna Roadtraveler, and brought here over a year ago by Jacob Meshberger. When Mr. Bixler recieved the tooth it was crumbled into little pieces tied together in a handkerchief, and now lately he succeeded in getting the proper parts glued together and reconstructing the tooth to its natural shape. It is larger than a man’s fist. The mastodon was one of the great mammals that roamed in herds all over this country in the quaternary period of the cenozoic era, thousands of years ago. It was probably twice the bulk of the greatest living elephant.
