W illiam Mardenis, retail grocer of Huntington, having been robbed by burglars twenty timesin three months, has sold out in despair. Miss Bell Berry, who is a candidate for mayor of Jeffersonville on the woman s reform ticket, believes in the I Nicholson law and baseball. James Rood Doolittle, who died recently, was one of the ninteen Senators of the United States who voted not guilty at the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, nearly thirty years ago. The vote stood: Guilty, 35; not gulity, 19. As a two-thirds vote was needed to convict, the impeachment proceedings failed bj' one vote. The once familiar “Card of Thanks” which was published after the death and burial of a member of a family, will be seen no more. Fashion, as well as good taste is frowning on the useless practice. Everybody knows that if there ever is a time when people are thankful it is to the friends who minister to them in time of sorrow. It needs no expression, and cannot beexpressed in the usual “Card of Thanks.” The trustees of a Methodist church in Muncie have probaly undertaken a task that will prove too much for them. They have unanimously adopted a resolution requesting all women to remove their hats during services. It is believed that the women, some of who go to church for no other purpose thantoexhibit their clothes and millinery, will ignore the resolution, although it is endorsed by the pastor. The /Etna Powder Company has a large powder mill in Lake county at Miller station twelve miles north of Crown Point. The mill is working a double force of men day and night including about 300 in all. Diamond, the monster elephant belonging to the Wallace show, died Friday evening from heart disease at the winter quarters near Peru. He was but a few inches smaller than the famous Jumbo and weighed over four tons. The state, through Madison county secured a judgment of SSOO againt the Standard Oil company, this judgment being affirmed. The grounds for holding the law constitutional are the same as are set forth in the injunction ease decided by the supreme court last week.
