The passage of the curfew law is no longer idle talk. Some time ago at a mothers’ meeting held in the central school building, it was decided to inaugurate a curfew ordinance and present the same to the common council of the city of Decatur for passage. This was done and after the regular preliminaries were given it and after it; had been referred to the proper com- i mittee and a report made, it was; brought up last Tuesday evening for ' final reading and passage. The bill j was carried and Decatur will in the future support a curfew law. The or- j dinance as it was passed says that it shall be nnlawful for any person under sixteen years of age to be or remain in or upon any of the streets, alleys or public places in the city of Decatur. Indiana, at night, after the hour of 8 o’clock p. m.. from March 1 to August 31, inclusive each year and from September 1 to the last day of February, inclusive, of each year, after 7 o’clock p. m., unless such person is accompanied by a parent, guardian or other person having the legal custody of such minor person, or is in performance of an errand or duty directed by such parent, guardian or other person having the care and custody of such minor person, or whose employment makes it necessary to be upon said streets, alleys or public places during the night time after such specified hours. It further says that it shall be unlawful for any such parent, person, guardian or any other such person having the legal care and custody of any person under sixteen years of age, to allow or permit any such child, ward or other person under such age, while in his or her legal custody, to go or be in or upon any of the streets, alleys or public places in said city within the time prohibited, unless there exists a reasonable necessity therefor. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall, upon conviction, be fined in any sum not less than one dollar nor more than ten dollars for each offense, and stand committed until such fine and costs are paid. The ordinance further prorides that it shall be the duty of the marshal or any member of the regular or special police force to arrest without a warrant any person violating the provisions of the ordinance?. Provided, | however, that no child arrested under ■ it» provisions shall be placed in confinement until they shall first be t*aken • home and the wishes of the parent or guardian ascertained and the parent j guard tail shall have refused td be I heU responsible for the observance of j the pvorieiow® of the ordinance by said minor person. If said parents or guardia •> fuse- to become responsible for the .irfcrioft of the ordinance by their chdd O'waiti, it shall then lie the duty of the Mayor, of the city of Decatur, to inquire' ioto the circumstances and if it fe found that the child is growing up in mendicancy or vagrancy or is incovgible he shall cause the proper proceedings to be taken as authorized atid provided by law in such cases. The ordinance makes it the duty of the citv marshal at the hour before stated to: ring the fire bell as a curfew bell. The | said Marshall shall cause four taps’of ; the bell, pause a moment, then repeat ! four taps again. This he shall do three times. Such ringing shall lie the signal that the time has arrived for the boys to be at home. This ordinance will be in effect as soon as the publication provided by law is made
which will be about the middle d[this month. The curfew law is a good one “ carried into effect, as it no doubt will and may cause many of our *.' • to be excellent men who would othi wise be rogues and crimina s. TRIBUTE OF HONOR AND RESPECT.
