THE DEMOCRAT IVm THURSDAY MORNING BY LEW G. ELLINGHAM. PUBLISHER. JI.M PER YEAR IN ADVANCE. Entered at the Postofflce at Decatur. Indiana as Second-Class Mall Matter. OFFICIAL PAPER OF ADAMS COUNTY. THURSDAY, JAN. 27. Every democrat should vote at the primary tomorrow’. It is your privilege and vonrdntv. The mid-winter meeting of the democratic * tl'torial association will r>e held at Indiam polis next Tuesday. The republican committee of Ad ams county are having numerous precinct meetings with a view of committee re-organ'xa<ion. Jrmiß McComas has been elected I <O the United States Sena'e by the. atate legislature of Maryland. He will succeed Arthur P. Gorman, the betrayer of democratic faith, when the Wilsm tariff bill was iu congress. The election of S-nator White of California, to be chairman of 'he democratic congressional campaign committee, and the adoption of a strong resolution, endorsing the Chicago platform, ended the career of numerous foolish fairy tales. William J. Bryan’s trip to Mexico his been graphically written up by that distinguished statesman, and in it he takes occasion to say that that poor, dilapidated silver country was prosperous and her people happc. Poor old Mexico. That long looked for and promised report of the finance committee of the council, is as yet hidden under the sime halt bushel, that has so long concealed its truthful nakedness from the scrutinizing event the public. Come gentlemen, there isa limit to this indnrance. Another monetary convention was hwld at Indianapolis this week, in which the gold standard was again applauded as a good thing. The Hanna’s were a con'r dlwg spirit m the convention, which in itself is conducive of no go "1 to anv one on'side of moneyed syndicates and rich monopolistic greed. Not many country newspapercan sustain a correspondent at the nation’s capitol. The Democrat. however, is more fortunate. Our representative is right on the field of ac'ion, kicking up »s much dust as any of the hoy- H's letter tht-we-k is of nniis<ial interest, and should be read by all our subscribers who apn-ciate a y •<•4 thing.
The h >t ra -de f -r recogn 1 - tion <>f Cubi bv the dem cats of th- house, his frigh'ended the whole adm'nis'ration oirfit very bad'y. Th- fake net’ of Spanish success in Cuba also indicate that the fright has extended to the Spaniaris. The fighting isn’t over yet. Rep-eseuta-tive Bailey proved on the fl tor of the house th »t the efforts of the democrats wese thwarted tor the time, only bv a breach of faith on the part of Czir R-ed and Mr. Hitt.

Czak Heed has one commendable trait —frankness When he learned that the commit l e on territories was inclined to favorably report bills for the admission of Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma as states, he told the members fltt-Kxi’ei that it was, useless for them to do so, as he did not intend that iho.e territorrtes should be admitted so long as h« had the power to prevent and the present conditions continue to exist, lie added that it was simply a qneslon of gold against silver, it being well known that each < f the territories named would send two silver men to the senate it they had the opportunity
Commenting <>u the democratic gubernatorial situation tn Indiana, Congressman Gr ffi'h says: ■* Ihe | maj rity of the d-mocr-iis in my ■ di-trict are favorable to the nomination of ex-Kepresentative Shively, jof South Bend, whose n <me headed ' he ticket in 1896.” Mr. Griffith confessed there was a great deal of i admiration for Mayor I'aggart among thedemocrats of his vicuittv, I but thought they favored Shively’s ! nomination as a measure of justice to that gentleman who led the forlorn hope in 1896 and who deserved a re-uomination, in their estimation, now that the chances for democratic success appear brighter from the democratic standpoint.—Sentinel. There i» oue little matter which our gold bug friends should ask the monetary commission people to explain while they are with us. In heir masterlv repor at page 12, they say: ‘'From 1792 to 1873 the legal standard of vame in the United States was the doub ! e one of gold and silver at prescribed ratio-.” This is an admission that there is such a thing as a double siandaM and that it existed in the United States. It is also a complete denial of that stat m -nt so confi leritly made by gold bug-, and recently r.pea'ed by Secretary Gige, that the United States demo e'tz-d Silver in 1834, and that we have had the gold standard for six y-four tears. The esteemed J ntrnal and News hive a right 'o a-k whit this commission means by rudely shattering theories that they have endeavored to build up by hours of patient woik and k-gs of prin’ers’ mk Tne financiers ought to be m >re considerate of the feelings of their fm nd-.—Se Tom Rbow is ihe tune and day! set for tne democratic prirmry elec-; lion in this county. The past few | div- hive been buSV ones for the w • mmy candidates who are seeking, recognition upon the county ticket | this fall. While the campugn hasbeen spirited yet the contest has! been an ex'reraely friendly One. 1' - is thoroughly understood »>y each] and every candidate that but one for each « ffice can be chosen, and ; white disappointment is bound to come to some one, yet it will in no I wise hinder them from doing their > duty during the corning campaign L-t every democratic voter in o d Adams be out to vote tom >rrow. i Don’t think it of little or no importance and stay away. This is I the time to select your choice, and you should not ouly vote but use your influence toward selecting a good, clean ticket. The personal d fferences existing are to be settle l i tomorrow, and this coming fail we | I will unite and add additional honor an I glory to our long list of tri- . umphant victories.

Mark Hanna is adding insult t« ; injury since his election as the junior senator from Ohio. In ths bribery investigation his henchmen under the paid advice of Hanna lawyers, refuse to answer questions. They have taken pointers from De catur councilmen, who also refused to answer questions on the ground that to do so would criminate themselves. Great is such official dtplom acy and statesmanship.
