Princeton, Ind., Jun. 8 —Uri Decker the young desperado, who pre-enterl a forged check to the I’armir's bank, has made a confession which reveals the existence of an organized gang of burglars and forgers in the town of Hazleton. Decker told Sheriff Murphy that he was led to commit hi., crime by two men in the latter place, who forced him to present the forged checks. Daleville Ind., Jan. 10.—Mrs. Mattie Harvey has completed arrangements and will leave for Klondike the latter part of this month. She is probably the first woman to go from Indiana. LIVED FIVE WEEKS. — I With the Ton of His Head Blown Off and Brain Exposed. Mooresville, Ind., Jan. 11.—John Elliott, the contractor who was accidentally shot by Benjamin Cooper, while hunting, is dead, having lived five weeks with the top of his head blown off and his brain exposed. For some time it was thought he would recover, but blood poisoning set in. Ancient Burial Bite, Observed. Flora, Ind., Jun. 11.-Mrs. Henry Eikenberry is dead of diabetes. She was a member of the Old Order branch of the German Baptist church and was buried according to the ancient rites o. that body. A spring wagon was used to convev the body to the cemetery. All the elders of the church delivered an oration over the remains. Twenty-One Years Each. Princeton, Ind., Jan. 10. — Martin Cross and Benjamin Putnam have been seutenced to 21 years for killing alentine Booten, near East Mount Carmel, last fall. Cross stabbed Booten with a butcherknife and Putnam was his accessory. Putnam’s attorneys ask for a new trial, claiming tiiat he is insane. Robert Moore Convicted of Murder. Rockport, Ind., Jan. 10. — Robert Moore was sentenced to the Indiana Reformatory in the circuit Court here for from two to 21 years for manslaughter. He was charged with killing Nicholas Troutvetter of Millersburg, in Warrick county, last February. Both young men were in love with the same girl. Gave the Footpad a Ride. Garrett, Ind., Jan. 10. —Lafayette ! Johnson, a farmer, was held up while returning home by a footpad, who wanted to ride with him. When two miles out he was hit over the head with an iron pin and rendered unconscious. His watch and money were taken. Resumed Passenger Traftic. Seymour, Ind., Jan. 11.—The first passenger train over the Southern Indiana railroad since the floods of last March went west yesterday and was greeted at the depot here by a large crowd of citizens, who are glad to see the road in operation again. Noah Baney Arrested. Indianapolis, Jan. 11.—Noah Baney, who figured in the late attempt to secure Rev. William E. Hinshaw’s release from i prison, has been arrested for receiving i stolen goods. About S4OO worth of groceries were found at his house. Father Corby's Successor. South Bend, Ind., Jan. B.—The Rev. John S. Zahm has been appointed provincial of the Order of the Holy Cross of the United States to succeed the late Father Corby of Notre Dame University. SUFFERING TERRIBLE AGONY. Mau’s Face, Hands and Feet Burst Open After Being Frozen. Chilicothe, 0., Jan. 11. — Peter Wingo is lying at the home of his brother, north of this city, with his hands, feet and face burst open, and it ' is not believed he can ever recover, j About a week ago, during the intense cold spell, Wingo, on the road home, was overcome by the cold and fell from his buggy. He lay uucuncious by the i roadside until morning, when he was found. His feet, hands and face were frozen solid, and he afterward swelled to euoimous proportions, finally bursting open. Wingo has suffered terrible agony. LATEST FROM DAWSON CITY. Will Be No Starvation a* Provisions are Only SI a Pound. Pont Townsend, Wash., Jan. 11. — Nine men from Dawson City have arrived here bringing advices up to Dec. 9. All say that while provisions are scarce there wiil be no starvation. Provisions can still be purchased from $1 to $1.50 a pound. Candles have been reduced from $1.25 to 50 cents each. The trip was made without special incident, dog teams being used. ROAD TAX RECEIPTS -Should be presented on or before the first Monday in May, as the road tax is all ncluded in the first installment. Road tax receipts will not be taken for second installment of taxes. Examine your receipts before leaving the office and see that all your property is described. Also see that change is correctly made. PARTICULAR ATTENTION.— Those who have lands and lots or other property in more than one township must see that they have a receipt for all. County orders cannot be paid to any person owing delinquent tax; all persons ire warned against purchasing such orders. (The books will positively be closed on the first Monday in May and the first Monday in November.) . Assignees, guardians, administrators and others who pay taxes on property in trust, and persons whose taxes are complicated, such as undivided estates, are earnestly requested to come before the last few days. The taxes of the Waggoner-Patton and Decatur and Bluffton gravel roads are now due and payable at this office and are subject to the same penalties as other taxes if not paid. . The municipal taxes of the city of Decatur and the towns of Berne and Geneva are payable at this office.
