Ind., Jan. 4.—The coal mine a half-mile south of this place lielonging to the Jabez Wooley Coal company caught fire Sunday morning and fs still burning. There were six mules in the mite and they were burned to death. When the fire was discovered the employes covered the entrance to the shaft, honing to smother the flames. The decision was fee the plaintiff. The greatest interest has prevailed in the suit, for it instil ve I the people’s rights as patrons of the company, and tlie outcome is the cause of much rejoicing. Indianapolis, Jan. 4.—The Indiana industrial associations' congress met this morning in the Statehouse and will he in session most of the week. Mayor Taggart welcomed the delegates to the city ami this afternoon Governor Mount and ex-Governor Matthews lead the discussion of the "Cattle Interests of Indiana.” The beet culture problem will receive con-iderable attention daring the meeting. Terre Haute, Ind., Jan. 4.—Experts Madison and Duncan, who are investigating rhe books of the city officials for the past 10 years, report a shortage of about $13,000 iu the accounts of ex-City Treasurer Wesley W. Hauck. The announcement caused a sensation. Mr. Hauck claims it is au error ami that he will be able to show it to be so. Little Girl Shot by Her Brother. Vincennes, lud, Jan. 4.—James Shepherd, 16 years old, pointed a revolver at his 10-year-old sister and playfully remarked he would shoot her. She bantered him and he pulled the trigger. His sister fell shot just above the heart. The young tnau realizing what he ha I done placed the pistol to his mouth and pulled the trigger, but the cartridge failed to explode. The girl will die. Head Crushed by a Falling: Tree. Hayden, Ind. Jan. I.—David Haynes, 26 years old. was instantly Killed while cutting down a tree near here. A large maple tree lodged and Mr. Hayues started t > cut down the second, which soon broke under the extra weight. A heavy slab split and flew backward, striking Hayues under the chin, crushing his head. Killed bv Falling on . Crowbar. Logan, lud., Jan. 4.—William Bugmyer at the Van Buskirk sawmill, near here, in climbing nto a wagon, slipped and fell on a crowbar which was standing upright. Rural Free Mail Delivery. Daleville, Ind., Jan. 4.—The experiment of the free delivery of rural mail begun here little more than a month ago is proving a success, and is accepted as a great boon by the farmers. London, Jan 4. —The Shanghai correspondent of The Daily Mail says: "The Russians tricked China into consenting to au occupation of Port Arthur by representing that the British fleet was coming to capture it. They also asked the Chinese to prohibit the English from landing. The latter refused; but the Englishman going ashore at Port Arthur is shadowed by the Russians.” Returned to Prison. Murray, Ky., Jan. 4.—Ou the last night of Jailer Farley’s term the jail was broken open and all the prisoners escaped. The principal one was Ballard Haynes, awaiting trial for killing his brother. One prisoner, Jumbo Willis, ret urned yesterday, having grown tired of wandering about the country. Silver Saved His Life Winchester, 0., Jan. I.— Samuel Moore, of Decatur, 10 miles below here, was cleaning a guu when it was discharged. The loud struck Moore in the groin, but four silver dollars in his pauts pocket prevented the shot from entering the flesh. Wants Senator Milin' Seat. Austin. Jan I.—Governor Charles A. Culber.-on has announced himself a candidate for the United States senate to succeed Roger Q. Mills, whose term will expire iu 1898.
