Indianapolis, June £1. —The murderer of Fireman Redmond has been run down. Superintendent Colbert returned 'from Nashville last night where he went in answer to a teley.rfln from the chief of police, telling ’Zm the man was in. the penitential/lhero. The murderer was round tj*»wgh what is known as the Bert-.xifbn system of measurement.’ His name is James Burton, alias Bennett, and he has served time at the Columbus penitentiary. It is from that institution that Mr. Colbert got his measurement. Burton will be pardoned by the governor of Tennessee and turned over to the Indiana authorities. Burton and another man entered the store '’if Job Elbridg-' in this citv. assaulted and attempted to rob him. Eldrige’s screams soon, brought assistance, among _them. Frank Redin md, who started after Burton as lit 1 was running away from the place. The burglar turned on' him amt shot him dotvn. Two other men are in jail as accessories. Burton acknowledged his guilt. STATE DEJIT. State Finance Board Wil! shortly Pay Another Indianapolis, June 19. — Another $200,000 will be paid on thcj state debt July 1 by the state board of finances" The board is in a fairway to make $lO, - 000 for the state by the transaction. In 1890 the st..te issued $3,905,00 ) 3 per cent refunding school fund bonds, payable at the pleasure of the state, after June 18, 1899, and due Jan. 18,1909 The bonds are. now held by. 18 savings banks and individuals in New York state. One savings bank which holds $509,000 of them has decided to go out of the business, and proposes to discount SBO,OOO of the bonds at 2 per cent for cash. The board accepted the offer and proposed to cash an additional $120,000 on the same terms. The members of the board have no doubt that the bank will accept the offer. The state is now steadily paying its debt. Unless some unforseen obstacle arises $600,000 additional will be paid, making the total for the year about sl,000,000. TORNADO’S WORK. Stores, Hotel and a Circus Badly Damaged at New Albany. New Albany, Ind., June 19. —During the passage of a tornado over this city yesterday a score of buildings were unroofed and the goods of several merchants were badly damaged. Several buildings were struck by lightning, a bolt hitting rhe Mexedon hotel, tearing off the cornice and thoroughly frightening the guests. One of Colonel Hall’s circus tents was ripped to pices. The monkey cage was overturned and broken opeh 'and the chattering animals escaped, The streets were strewn with trees. STUDENTS DROWNED. Elisha Miller and Wile Drink Water In Which There Is Arsenic. Charleston. Ind., June 19. —Elisha Miller and wife were poisoned yesterday by drinking water out of a well on their promises. They uro in n preenrious condition, but their lives will probably be saved. Someone had thrown arsonic in the pump. _____ Daughter Testifies Against Her Father. Laporte, Ind., Juno 22. — C'harlos Pinkerton’s trial for the murder of his nephew was resumed yesterday. The trial was interrupted about 10 days ago by the attempt of the prisoner to cut his throat. Yesterday Daisy Pinkerton, daughter of the accused man and widow of the dead num, gave damaging testimony, through tears, against her father, as did also his son. Death of N. O. Day. Scottsburg, Ind., June 19.—N. O. Ray, 30 years old, a well known man of this city, died here late yesterday of an abscess of the lungs. Until his recent illness, which dates from last January, he was deputy auditor of Scott county. He was a member of various organizations, including the Odd Fellows and United Order Golden Cross. He was also a member of the M. E. church. Soldier Dies In the Insane Hospital. Muncie. Ind., June 21.—John F. Collins, aged 62, of this city, died Saturday at the Richmond hospital for insane, after 15 years’ confinement. His mind became deranged from excessive pain resulting from an injury to his spine during the war by a caisson running over him after he had been shot down. Populist Nomination. North Vernon, Ind., June 19.—The Populist convention of the Fourth district has nominated U. M. Browder of Greensburg for congress. The platform declares for the free and unlimited coinage of silver and reaffirms the Omaha platform. Sirs. Phoebe Johnson Dead. /Plainfield, Ind., June 22. — Mrs. Fhoebe Johnson, wife of Eli ( Johnson, is dead of exhaustion incident to old age. She was born-in North Carolina in 1817, coming to Indiana in 1834, and marrying Mr. Johnson in 1841. Killed by the Big Four. Markleville, Ind., June 32. —Othc C. Houston of Emporia went to sleep on the Big Four tracks near here last night and was run down by a northbound passenger. His injuries are fatal. • Ohio G. A. K. Chillicothe, 0., June 18.—The an nual encampment of the Ohio depart ment of the G. A. R. was addressed yes terday by Congressman Grosvenor am others. .On account of the heat in June jt was decided to hold the encaihpinenl dt Mount Vernon next year and all encampments hereafter not later than Maj 15. Resolutions were adopted for tin $8 pension to all and the service pension of 1 cent per day payable monthly. Counterfeiters Captured. Vicksburg, Mich., June If).—Jeromt Tompkins, Charles Lyon anil Dorr Holliday have been arrested her? on a charge of counterfeiting. The molds and li silver dollars were found in Tompkins’ barn.
