LINN (IROVE. i- ' —— ■■ ... i. ~ . George W. Nichols who purchased the Nuemchwander saloon, some three months ago, took charge of the business on Wednesday of this week. Peter Parrot and Mrs. Ellen Walker, his (laughter, moved to Decatur last. week. Married, at the parental residence on Saturday evening November 28th, John Hornady to Sarah E., the youngest daugiiterofMr. and Mrs. William Hall; Rev. Reichart officiating. ,Samuel Hall has bought the Harvey Eckrote dwelling of Joseph Aibersou ’and moved the building on the east sjde of the j ipike on the land of John Hall where he I will be at home in the near future. A joint institute of the townships of Hartford and French was held at this place last Saturday and an interesting program was disposed of. Last Saturday the barn and hearse rooms of John G. Adler was discovered to be on firdand burned to the ground. Many of our people were at dinner when the alarm Was given, so when help arrived it could only be applied In saving the two hearses and other valuables, and to keep other adjacent buildings from the destroying ele-
im nt as several were on fire at the same time. Tht* contest was long, fearful and laborious between the defying flames and our people and in reviewing the work accomplished, the beholder can but exclaim it is astonishing. The destroyed building also contained a room stored with dry walnut and other valuable lumber and burial cases which was the cause of the excessive heat. The contents of this room could also have saved had the people known that it was there. Dr. G. Emick moved, his .household goods for safety and his effort would not have been in vain had the flames not been cornered in the buildings adjacent. Mr. Adler’s loss is quite a heavy one as the building was mw, large and expensively built. Notes of The fire, the ringing of all,the church and school bells, brought many peopfe from the country who rendered assistance in the hour of peril. The major part of commendation is due the ladies in subduing the tire It would require three men to equal the service of two women. Mrs. Eugene Runyon and Miss Cora Meschberger would fill the posi-tioir-of chiefs of the fire department. The foriper was seen to take a stalwart man by the arm and say, ‘ Why stand yon here? Go carry water lis women have become exhausted.” The gray overcoated six-footer went to work. Cora induced a young school teacher to action in the same manner. And now on the same night when our people were fatigued from subduing the destioying element, some persons void of human conscience entered the barns of Heller, Runyon & C >., and of F. A. W. Lindsey and stole, away all of their harness, being three seis faj- the former and a part of one for the latter, ’being all there was at home at the time.
