Indianapolis, June 16. — Secretary Bicknell of rhe state board of charities and corrections has written a letter to. the district judge of Monroe c< unty, calling his attention to the condition of the county jail. Mr. Bicknell found it in a very unsanitary condition, unfit for the habitation of prisoners. Ixm\XAPtn.is. .Itiim. 12. —The Marion comity grand jury failed to return an indictment against Albert Lintt’er. who has been held in jail for several weeks on suspicion of having murdered Leo Ilirth, a West Washington street saloonkeeper. The grand jury found that there was not sufficient evidence on which to hold Lintner, and recommended that he lie discharged. _ He has been released from the custody of the sheriff. Last spring two masked men robbed the saloon and house where H>rth lived. They were discovered by Ilirth and his wife,and beat a retreat, firing revolvers as they went out. Just a- they passed out of the sleepingroom one o! them made a remark and shot Hirth through the heart. Lintner is an ex-convict, and was suspected of the murder, as he had been seen hanging around the neighborhood for some days. He was arrested a few days later, anil Mrs. Ilirth said he re-emhled the man who did the shooting. Bloomingtiix. ImJ,.. June 12.— The athletic season in Indiana University ended sadly ye.-terday in the death of John K. Sheridan of concussion of till? brain, the result of being struek with a .ball from the hands of the third baseman. He was umpiring a game between the seniors and faculty on Tuesday afternoon, and was accidently struck in "the temple by a ball. He fell senseless to the ground mid was carried to the home of Dr. Harris, where-he roomed. He seemed to improve until about noon yesterday, when lie began sinking and <m d in less than one hour. He was the shortstop of the Indiana University ball team, a member of the junior class, and his home is near Lebanon. The.lioirie folks knew nothing of the accident until his death was announced. <?

Sullivan, Ind., June- I?.—The firm operating mines at Jackson Hill has issued notice saying it was their purpose to start the rnines and that all miners making application, would lie given work, while those occupying company houses, and not making application, were ordered to vacate the company property to make room for miners who would take their places. This shows thaPthe operators are determined to recommence getting out coal. Two Large Barns Burned. Avrora, Ind., June 12. —Two large barns belonging to W. B. Beckett, eight miles west of here, were burned yesterday by inee.ndia.ries. The loss includes 1,500 bushels of eorn, 195 tons of hay, t wp cows, one horse and ether property. Stewart, who died several years ago. was one of the most prominent citizens of liorthern Indiana. He Was a .Mason of high degree and served several teriris in the legislatureAlthough never formally adopted, Miss ■Wist was in everyNvay their daughter, and before Mrs. Stewart died, two months ago, she deeded Miss West her property, valued at about $20,000. The suit is to set aside the real estate conveyance, it being alleged that Mrs. Stewart was in feeble health and that Miss \\ est exercised undue influence over her ami fraudulently secured, the conveyances. Saloons Are Not Wanted, Lewisville, Ind., June 13. —The people of Franklin townsnip, Henry county, are earnest in their opposition to the'retail liquor traffic. For the third time a successful remonstrance Ims been filer! against a licensed saloon in flits place, and all of these remonstrances went before the county commissioners with an average of 244 signatures out of a total of 300 voters.
