’secured a verdict Gas Company Ordered to Pay Back | an Alleged Overcharge. QUESTION WILL BE APPEALED. Should the Decision Be Sustained Hundreds of Other Sults Will Probably Be Filed—Verdict For the Husband In the Ilirsliburg-Jonas Damage Suit—Other Interesting News Items. Indianapolis, Fob. 24.—George W. Pitts has secured a verdict against the Indianapolis Gas company, Justice Walpole rendering a judgment for $36.97. It was charged in the coinplaint that the gas company had collected $2 per month for a cookstove when the ordinance rate is only $1.25. The company claimed in defense that Pitts should pay the same rate as hotels and restaurants because he kept :t few borders, but the justice thought the plea rather lame, and gave‘the plaintiff a judgment for the overcharge for about two years, with interest. The gas company will appeal. Should the ruling be sustained hundreds of other suits will probably be filed by people who have been compelled to pay over the legal rate. Accused of Incendiarism. SENATE AND HOUSE Matters of Importance Before the Two Branches of Congress. CUBAN AND TARIFF QUESTIONS. Friends of the Insurgent Cause Will Take I Up Much of the Thue of th« Upper Hotisc .— Representatives Hurrying Up | the Appropriation Bill* In Bropuratlon For an Early Adjournment. j Washington, Feb. 24.—The probabilities are that the Cuban question and the tariff bill as affected by the silver substitute will divide the greater part | of the time of the senate during the present week. Senator Dubois, chairman of the committee on public lands, is anxious to secure unanimous consent to lay the Cuban resolution aside to permit the consideration of the bill extending the limitation of the time in which suite may’ be brought to secure the restoration of certain granted lands to the government. The present limitation expires in Maroh and the president has. by a special message to congress, asked for immediate action. This bill is one which will excite some debate, but it is probable that an amicable arrangement will be made for its consideration some time during the week. Senator Morgan will continue his sjieech on the Cuban question whenever that subject is again taken up. He probably will consume the greater part of another day in expounding his views, and will be followed by other senators, including several of the members of the committee'on foreign relations, among them being Senators Sherman, Gray and Turpie. There also will be speeches on Cuba by several senators not members of the committee. Senator White will make an address during the week on the legal aspect of the Cuban resolution, criticising its form and contending that there can be no recognition of belligerency except by executive action. It is not thought probable that a vote will be had this week. Senator Carter will make his speech Wednesday on the tariff silver bill, and he is expected to explain his reasons, as well as those of his Republican colleagues, in voting against the. consideration of.the bill upon Senator Morrill’s motion. He will in all likelihood be followed by other senators who acted with him, and a very animated debate may result. For an Early A.l.jonrnnient, The house is pushing ahead the appropriation bills with all possible speed with a view to an early tinal adjournment. Already five of the general appropriation bills have been sent to the senate. The Indian bill is now under consideration and the legislative, executive and judicial, the next in order, is on the calendar. The naval and postofflee bills will be brought in this week. The house leaders are still hopeful that some way can be found to secure j action on the tariff bill in the senate, but beyond that there appears to be little-chance for general legislation except perhaps a bankruptcy, and possibly a Pacific railroad bill. Consequently they are hunying along the appropriation bills and shaping things for an early adjournment. Mr. Cannon, chairman of the appropriation committee, stated yesterdqy that sine ment should be reached by the middle of May. Notice has been given by Mr. Johnson of liidiaua that he will callup the Vau-horii-Tarsney contested election case to- ' morrow, but beyond that it is expected | that-the -appropriatioa-biHs will consume the remainder of the week.
