To Make Bov* Good. It is stated that the Shelbyville ministerial association has planned away to make boys good. • Several ladies of the various churches gave a reception and banquet on New Years day to about 250 boys and b' young men. Each one was asked to write his name on-a card telling his habits and aspirations in life. The ladies will keep the cards five years and then examine them to see what each young man has accomplished. This plan might serve a good purpose here.—Bluffton News. The asprations of our boys are all so high that we need nothing of H , the kind. INFLUENCE. SAI» TO HAVK CUT A FIGURE AT . RUSHVILLE. Free from Ammonia, Alum or any other adulterant, 40 YEARS THE STANDARD. WANTS A CONTEST. A' Proposed Musical Festival To Be Held in Adams t'oiinty in the Near Future. Editor Democrat. —While the minds of the people are engaged in solving the Venezuela question, financiers grappling with the treasury deficit and the issuing of bonds, we are apt to forget or overlook some of the duties we owe to our county, our neighborhood, our home. The good roads question is being agitated, and well it may be, when we consider the impassable condition of the public highways within the past three weeks, Farmers are discussing in institutes the best plans whereby their profession may be made more remunerative as well as pleasant. These and many other questions of more or less importance to the physical, moral and spiritual welfare of our people receive more than a passing notice. But more particularly there are certain elements in our character which it should be our business to cultivate, and which, if carefully nurtured will be a source of constant pleasure to the possessor. Too often in our desire to succeed in life we allow our best talent to become latent, until by disuse we almost forget that such a power ever existed In such cases what is most needed is a stimulus that will call forth those energies and develop talent of which the community, perhaps the possessor himself was not aware. In many localities there is a custom of annually giving a contest, which is certainly a splendid manner of ascertaining the natural endowments of individuals. The program usually embraces music, oratory and poetry, and to stimulate, to the best endeavor, suitable prizes are offered. I see no reason why such a ccntest might not be held in this county sometime during the spring or latter part of the winter. I believe it would be productive of much good and exert a great influence on those three outward manifestations of the soul—music, oratory, poetry A contest of the kind I have in mihd embraces competition on a chorus for .mixed joices. glee for mixed voices, male male qndtfet;' quartet for mixed voices, duett, 8 and A. duett T and B, solos for each of the parts, piano solo, oration, poem and declamation, the whole forming a day of refined and elevating .pleasure to the listers, and of enjoyment as well as profit'to the performers. To carry through such an entertainment successfully will require the expenditure of considerable money which is supposed to be made from the sale of seats. Adjudicators of music can seldom be gotten for less ihan $75 00; then the prizes, hall rent, printing, etc., make the risk cohsiderable. Earnest co operation of the people is the only thing that can insure success. Adams county undoubtedly possesses fine talent, which on such an occasion could be seen at its best, and I have confidence to believe that the people would be eager to hear and know what the county can do in the lines of work above stated. 1 should he glad to correspond with choir leaders, musician^ 1 or others interested, in'reference to this, and if enough give assurance that they will participate, it would give me pleasure to make arrangements for a contest in a spirit of friendliness for the cbanfpipnship ot the county. Details of the plan will be furnished upon request by addressing “W. B.” care of Daily Democrat, Decatur, Ind. Pleasant Mills. Jan 8. New jCamea. Rinehart D Leimanstall vs Katis C Brown.
