■TUN SERVICES. Notable Day For the Epworth League Convention at Chattanooga. WILL BE LONG REMEMBERED Seale Lookont Mountain Before Dawn* and Hold Service* In tile Early Morning Hour*— Graphic Description of the Meeting and the Stirring Scene*— Methodist Shout* aud Hand Shaking*. Chattanooga, June 29. — Lookout mountain was stormed early yesterday morning by 2,000 Epworth leaguers, who took possession without opposition. At 2:30 o’clock the street cars began to move the young Methodists toward the mountains. As the cars ran through the city and suburbs their occupants made the air resound with the old fashioned Methodist eampmeeting music. Darkness covered the lace of the mountain as they reached its base, but that did not deter them from their purpose. With gladsome song and hearty shouts the ascent was begun. On they went until a steady stream was scaling the side of the historic old mountain. Service* on the Mountain. It was a grand scene that the eye beheld as the summit was reached. The grey of the early dawn had put in its appearance and one could catch glimpses of the surrounding landscape. Great clouds of mist hung over the city and the valley. The faint outlines of the Tennessee river could be, traced as it gracefully made its turn on the Moccasin' bend. The assembled band of Wesleyan pilgrims, representing almost every state of the Union and also the dominion of . Canada, reverently uncovered their heads end began their devotions, Rev. George R. Stuart, the celebrated evangelist, who assists Sam Jones in his meetings, led the meeting. As he stood and talked to the people of the love of Got! and of the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ; and as one looked upon the peculiar surroundings of the assembly, his mind ran back to that noted meeting nearly 1,900 years ago, when a great assembly of people heard the gospel proclaimed by its great founder upon a mount of Palestine. Was a Notable Scene. The sermon on the mount was in the minds and hearts of all present. But what is this? The face of nature has changed. The great clouds are rolled back, the mist is fleeing as if in wild alarm and the grey is turning into the rosy tints of the morn. The worshippers stand as if lost in devotion and adoration. Their hearts are brought close to the God of nature, who is so beautifully and majestically revealing his power to them. They stand silent and then as there peers over the distant horizon the first beams of the great king of day they all, as if moved by a common spirit, break forth with the long i meter doxolOgy, •‘Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow.” Hand Shaking and Shouting. The good Methodists could stand it no longer. Their pent np feeling became exuberant and old shouts were given and handshakes were exchanged on all sides. It was a scene never to be forgotten. The day was given to the carrying out of an elaborate prepared programme of routine papers ami addresses of interest to the leaguers. Tht>appearance of a colored speaker, Rev. John Wesley Bowen of Atlanta, was the occasion” of generous applause from the audience. At the afternoon meeting a great hit was made by an address by Dr. Carlos Martyn, a Presbyterian minister from Chicago, who spoke on Christian citizenship. He said that the •municipal affairs at the south were in most instances well and honestly conducted. Speaking of Chattanooga, Dr. Martyn said: “You Christian people should thank God that you have a mayor who ts clean, honest and progressive. ” SHOT FOR A BURGLAR. Fate of a 16-Year-OJd Boy, Son of a Rich Planter. Dallas, Tex., June 29.—J. B.'Dicker - son, a jeweler, killed a 16-year-old boy about 3 O’clock yesterday morning, who he claims was a burglar. The body was identified as that of John F. Reeves, son of a rich planter of Chico, in Wise county. The dead boy and his 13-year-old frother, Tobe Reeves, were witnesses in the federal court against William Hauge, charged with counterfeiting silver coin, and had been in Dallas several days. Friends of the Reeves family declare that the boy was not a burglar, but that some conspiracy .led him To where he was killed to get him out of the way as a witness. Reeves was fpund dead in the street 150 yards from Dickerson’s show window. The Reeves family, it is claimed, will press investigation on the theory of conspiracy and foul play. BIG TIMBER SUIT. Lnm.ber Men Chun-ged With Denuding Territory Without Warrant. St. Paul, June 29. — Tho United States in an action brought in the circuit court bv Snecial Counsel John E. The government has fiteen working up the ease for two and a half years. For Rifling the Mall*. Cincinnati, June 39.—At Covington, Ky., yesterday Judge W. H. TOOKPASSPORTMONEY State Department Messenger Boy Suspeeted of the Offense. HE SPENT MONEY LAVISHLY. Official* Had Bean Greatly My»Hfleii by Demand* From Person* Who Had Not Reeeivod Replle* to Communication*. Lottery Company Cases Not Sent to Attorney General—The Bond Contract. Washington, June 20.—For some time past the head of the pass]>ort bureau (if the state department has been mystified, by receiving demands from persons in various towns and cities for u prompt reply to their applications for passports or the return of the money which they had sent to the department. In each case investigation failed to show that any such applications had been received.® It was apparent that stealing was going on somewhere, and after close watching suspicion settled upon a boy named Kirk McMurtye, a messenger whose duty it was to get the mail from the mail clerks and carry it to the passport bureau. It was found that ho had been indulging in lavish expenditure, taking other boys on excursions down the river and generally showing that he had much money to spend. 'Die amount of money lost is not yet known, but it is certain to run well up in the hundreds of dollars from the number of complaints that have been received, and it is said that one day, last Saturday, 18 letters, each enclosing a dollarrfor a passport, were abstracted from tlin mail. McMurtye has been discharged. THE BOND CONTRACT. Rumors That It lias Been Modified Are Not Credited. Washington, June 29.— The treasury officials now in the city still maintain perfect silence as to what#if any modifications, have been made in the bond contract, or what, if any, basis there is for the rumor that the syndicate will no longer use its influence to protect the government from gold withdrawals for export. The rumor, however, is given no credence here by persons having any knowledge of the situation. It is more than probable, it is said, that the syndicate has obtained permission from the secretary to make temporary deposits of domestic gold which is subsepuently to be replaced by importations from London. The exact facte in the case, however, cannot in the absence of Secretary Carlisle, be learned here. LOTTERY COMPANY CASES. They Will Not lie Sent to the Attorney General. Washington, June 29.—A number of alleged lottery companies which have been debarred the use of the mails by the postoffice authorities have recently caused to be circulated statements that their cases were to be appealed to the attorney general of the United States. The law officials of the postoflice department state that these appeals were still in the hands of Postmaster General Wilson, and that it was highly improbable that he would forward them to the attorney general, as similar cases had already been passed upon by the department of justice adversely to the appellant. One of the chief companies involved is the Pettis Bond Investment company of Sedalia, Mo. Others are scattered over the west-. Protest* ARalnst Davidson’s Removal. Washington, June 29.—A determined effort will be made to secure the restoration to office of Professor George Davidson. Chiqago, June 29. —Governor Altgeld may have to resort, to other measures than his plan of continuously reconvening the Illinois legislature if he persists in attempting to secure the enactment of laws on arbitration, Pullman rates, etc. Both houses yesterday, after considerable tumult but little or no business, voted to adjourn until July 9. The Democrats voted against the step, but were overwhelmed by the Republicans. An attempt to cut off the pay of members during the lengthy-recess was defeated. . ' Guilty of Murder.
