Sheridan, Ind., April 20.—The gas well drilled a few days since northeast of this place has proved to be a great, wonder. People for miles around are driving to see the great sight, and huu-' dreds visited the well yesterday. Carriages and buggies, filled full, are seen driving in that direction this morning. Another effort is being made to anchor the well. A 5-inch stream of water is shooting 25 feet above the derrick, reaching a hight of 100 feet. Unless the owners get the well under control soon, the farms in the neighborhood will be flooded with water. PUBLICLY COWHIDED. Irate Worn** Gives a Prominent Doctor a Severe Chastisement. Crawfordsville, Ind., April 20.—At Lindon yesterday Mrs. John Vise, the wife of the hotel proprietor, publicly cowhided Dr. W. A. Lofland, a prominent citizen. The grievance lay in words attributed to the victim affecting the character of the enraged lady. Mrs. Vise, who is a large, powerful woman, beat the feeble doctor almost to death. There is much feeling over the affair. Decision Against Mrs. Gongar. Lafayette, Ind., April 20.—Judge Everett has rendered a decision in tire suit of Mrs. Helen Gougar, wherein sue sought to recover damages from the election board for refusing her vote last November. Judge Everett held in brief that under the national anti state constitutions women were excluded from suffrage, that privilege being given to ; male citizens only. The opinion derives importance by reason of being a test ease. Arrested at the Prison Door. Jeffersonville, Ind.. April 20. — Edward Houston was released from the prison south yesterday, after serving three years for larceny. Immediately upon release he was arrested by a'deputy sheriff from Butler county, 0., where he is wanted on a charge of robbing a railway conductor of S2OO and a watch. He was an unruly an<j, ugly prisoner and has given the prison offi-' cers much Ravaget* of AphU. Wabash, Ind., April 20. —State Geologist Blatchley has pronounced the small green bugs now ravaging fruit buds in this county to be ordinary aphis, | He states that it is likely to inflict great, ; injury upon the fruit crop if its ravages | are allowed to go unchecked, and he | suggests as a remedy a liberal spraying with soapsuds. The bugs have appeared in countless millions throughout northern Indiana. Pump House Burned. Bluffton, Ind., April 20.—The pump house on the Morrison oil farm, south of the city, caught fire yesterday and burned down, the flames injuring John Dibble, a pumper, so that he will die. Seventeen wells are located on the lease and the fact that they are shut down through the dtcidpnt will cause great | loss to its operators. Confessed His Guilt. . Jefferso.. VILLE, Ind., April 20.— i Clarence Berry, one of the mfcn impli- ' cated in numerous thefts here, has made a full confession. He implicates two men named Willis, together With Bur--ton Johnson and two men named Calhotin and Chapman. Calhoun was recently arrested at Columbus and Johnson has been captured at Cincinnati, o - Suit For Damage*. Terre Haute, Ind., April 20.—Sophrona E. Sullivan has sued Benjamin S. Shull for SIO,OOO for alleged betrayal under promise of marriage. The plaintiff is 21 yeara old and the daughter of Bev. Sullivan of Fontanet. The defendant is 38 years old and lives with his father, who is a wealthy farmer near Rosedale. Under the Wheel*. o English, Tnd., April 20.—A stranger about 28 years old, supposed to Come from Borden, committed suicide hereby jumping beneath a railroad engine. He is supposed to be named Pike Brown. His remains, torn and unrecognizable, are ready for burial here if not claimed. Find Charred Human Remain.. Elwood, Ind., April 20.—There is considerable excitement here over the report that the charred remains of a man were found in the spot where a straw stack recently burned on the McCord farm, just south of the city. An investigation is being made. Old People Marry. Clayton, Ind., April 20.—Nathan York, aged 78 and a resident of Hendricks county, for over GO rears.’ has married Miss Rebecca Alleti of Monrovia, Who is 60 years old. There is much protest Thomas Robinson, an old veteran, near North Vertion, wandered from home and laid down in a field and died. A rumor is in circulat.ion at Indianapolis that J. O. Henderson, ex-state auditor, will start a Democratic paper in that city. The insurance companies have paid $51,500 losses on stock and materials by ths burning-of the starch works at Columbus. Mrs. George Cooper of Shelby county was fatally prostrated through the excitement incident to the burning of their house.
