The balance of power in the United Slates Senate held for some months by Gorman, Hill, Murphy, Smith, McPherson and Camden has disappeared never to return to them, it is to be hoped. Some day there will be a genuine Democratic irity in the Senate and it will keep faith with the people, and keep its pledge. Ox the fifth ballot a successor to Bishop K iickerbacker was selected <n the person of John 11. White, of Tairbault, Minn. There were thir-ty-five clergymen and sixty-five laymen present at the convention. Representative Blue, of Wells county, in a letter to Rev. Craven, of Ossian, says he is in favor of the Nicholson bill regula'ing the sale of liquors as it now is. The saloonkeeper will have to remove all screens, blinds and all obstructions of any kind, the front to be the same as any other business house. Tne city of Portland seems to be reveling in a luxusy in the shape of nearly §IOO,OOO of a city debt with bat little to show for the money. Whether it is good Republican financeering, or as some of the Re/ publican stump speakers used u> say of the national debt, “It is a National blessing,” This may be the case with Portland’s debt nearing the §IOO,OOO it may be a bless ing tolhem; but it must be in disguise. Our little city is like al) others. We have our tough and bad element. They seem to flourish every place both in the city and country, but the city usually sejams to be the best adapted to such people, and as the older ones pass off of the stage of action their places seem to be filled by younger ones who seem to think it is smart to imitate the tough citizen. You can see some of our boys, who while tender in years, can swear as hard, talk as much obscene talk, chew a big chew of tobacco and act as tough as though they have had years of experience in the acts they are performing, while some of them do so from the fact that they believe it makes them look like a tough, but the time comes to a number of them whe they will feel that they would lik to wipe that much of their life from their history, but it is written so indellible upon their countenance that it can’t be erased, and if they should try io forget it, there is always some one who is ready to remind them of their folly. About the first step you see a young man lake is the cigarette or the quid of . tobacco, then you have him take the name of God m vain, soon he will be seen looking blear- eyed it not checked, you will find him a full fledged todgh, ready for anything bad that may come, or his evil associates may suggest. The horse stopped immediately to “take in” the “sights,” while the gentleman extricated him self, shook the snow from his collar and made a hasty search for the ladies, who were soon found and “gotten” into the sleigh, and they proceeded to bob along serenely.
