SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION. The Adams county Sunday School Union met in convention at the Christian church in this city Nov. 15th at 9:30 a. m. Rev. C. D. Meigs, of Indianapolis opened convention with devotional exercises, after which delegates gave their answer to the query: “What am I here for?” Roll was then called and committee appointed, after which Rev. Meigs addressed the convention on the subject “The Sabhath School Work.” This was followed with an address by the state secretary, Charles L. Weavers, subject: “Statistics.” AFTERNOON SESSION. At two o’clock devotional exercises conducted by State s Superintendent Rev. Meigs, after which C. L. Weaver addressed the convention, subject: “The Home Class Department.” This address was followed with one by Rev. Smith of the Baptist church on the subject: “How to hold our new scholars for life.” Rev. Meigs next andressed the convention, subject: “Sunday school efficiency through teachers.” Next Was the reports of committees. , EVENING SESSION. Convention met at the Evangelical church. Rev. Spray of the U. B. church conducted the service with scripture lesson and prayer, after which Rev. Wise of the Evangelical church addressed the convention on the subject: “Sunday school efficiency through the superintendent.” This Was followed by an address by Rev. Meigs, subject: “What am 1 in the Sunday school for and what am I doing?” This closed the work of the convention. The attendance was not what it might have been, but as a whole the convention was a success. J. E. Stoops, Secretary. Committee on Nomination reported: We your committee recommend the following: For County President—A. Van Camp. For County Secretary—Nellie Blackburn. For County Treasurer—John Woy. For County Superintendent—Rev. J. E. Stoops. These four to constitute the Executive Committee, Nor Township President: Union, tp, John Shifferly. Root tp, John Christen, Jr. o Preble tp, Alex Garboden. ' Kirkland tp, Joshua Bright. Washington tp, Rev. Alexander. St. Marys tp, S. C. Cramer. Blue Creek tp, Miss Holmes. Monroe tp, T. P. Hanis. French tp, Vincent Bell. Hartford tp, Wabash tp, Ida Long. Jefferson tp, Mr. Amspaugte The report was adopted aim the persons recommended were unanimously elected. Committee on resolutions reported the following: Wheras, deploring the indifference to the unorganized condition of the Sunday school work in Adams coiiiity, be it therefore: Resolved, That we will individually endeavor by ail possible means to create a deeper and more widespread interest in the state, county and township organizations, and in the different Sabbath school con vention. Resolved, That we pledge to the officers of this county our hearty support and cooperation and all hold ourselves in readiness for any active, aggressive service we can perform when called upon by any county or townshipofficer. Resolved, That we as a part of the state organization, pledge it our allegiance and accept the apportionment of at least 815.00 asked of our county for the state work. The same to be paid before the close of the year ending June 1,1895. Resolved, That we ask each Sunday school in the county to take an annual collection for the support of our county and state association and that if possible,this collection shall be made equal to, and not less than an average of two cents for each member enrolled, and that our county secretary be instructed to send a copy of these resolutions to each Sunday school superintendent in the county and ask for the above collection at an early date. Resolved, That we favor the plan for complete county and township organization and instruct our executive committee to hold regular quarterly meetings according to the plan adopted by the state association. Resolved, That we offer our sincere thanks to the state superintendent and secretary for their presence and help in this convention and to the officers of the different churches through whose kindnes we have a place to meet. Resolved. That we recommend the Home Glass department to the schools as presented by the state secretary with the motto, “All the Sunday Schools in the Church and all the Churches in the Sunday School,” and that a county superintendent of the Home class department be elected. ROOT TOWNSHIP. Miss Maud Kern, of Elkhart, who has been visitlug friends and relatives here, returned home last Saturday. Miss Della Mullen, of Albany, Ind., was the guest of Mrs. Isaac Zimmerman last week. Misses Jessie and Mollie Burwell, of Bluffton, was the guest of Mrs. Malinda Zimmerman last wgek. While sawing wood last Saturday morning Charley Kern met an accident in which the buzz saw caught his fingers, mangling them badly. The protracted meeting which has been held at Calvary for over two weeks is still progressing with good success. LINN GROVE. Miss Henneretta Landman,* of Piqua, Ohio, is the guest of her friends here. Dr. A. Haughton is at Indianapolis tliis week attending the Grand Lodge of the 1.0.0. F. We are the recipient of two of J. F. Neaderhouser’s latest poeriis of Colorado Springs, Cot, entitled respectively, “October and Ode to Colorado Springs.” John is one of the Linn Grove boys and no longer a novice in the production of poem’s. The Hartford OH Co., are erecting an oil derrick on the farm of E. C. Martin, and drilling for oil will commence at an early date. The boiler and engine are being set at the Pioneer Mills this week, the other machinery is also being placed in position, when Linn Grove will again have a mill at no distant date. Mrs. Louisa Hoffman and sbn, D. Forest, were at Bluffton last Wednesday. ’ Dr. Jacob McDowell, of South Hartford, was here on business last Wednesday. MONMOUTH. Mrs. John Wolford is on the sick list, but at this writing is some better. Our schools opened last Monday after a vacation of two weeks. The attendance is increasing. Who is the best man in Monmouth? Two of our well-knowu citizens entered in a combat as to which of them was the best man. The result was broken fists and black eyes. Jonas Cline thumb last Saturday. Two of David Rice’s children are sick with the chicken-pox. Solomon Rupert visited his son Uriah, of this place last week. G. A. Christen is on the sick list, but was able to commence school on Tuesday. He Is wielding the sod at Dist. No. 8. Ida Wilder is at Decatur this week, Don’t forget the concert at the school house Thanksgiving evening. PREBLE. David Werling, Joe Zollinger and J. Van Vorhees were.at Fort Wayne, Thursday on business. Freddie, the little boy of John Hey’s has been very sick. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Carpenter drove to Fort Wayne Sunday. , Mrs. Dan Beibrich is very sick. Geo. Werling and John Hey were at Decatur Saturday. Wm. Goldner last Friday fell through between the joists while at work on Werling saw mill striking on his faee bruising it severely. Milt Byers, of Decatur, was a business caller here last Friday. Miss Clayton, of Fort Recovery, was the guest of E. Hanna over Sunday. Jake Miller, of Decatur, was in town a short time Sunday evening. Mrs. McWhirter, of Uniondale, returned home last Tuesday after a two weeks visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Seth Weldy. Werling & Dilling shipped a car load of drain tile to Lima, Ohio, Wednesday. The pay car on the C. <fc E. passed through here Wednesday making the boys happy. Mrs. Wm. We hope that he will salnte the woman who will be brave enough I to crack his little round turnip head. Peter Ashbaucher, the sheriff-elect, moved his household effects through Mon-1 roe last Monday, on his way to jail at Decatur. Peter was trustee of Monroe township and being elected sheriff, resigned his township office. We are sorry to lose as good a citizen, and while it is Monroe township's loss it is Decatur’s eternal gain. Farewell Peter, you served us well as our trustee, ann hope your record as sheriff of Adams county will be as honorable and , satisfactory to the the people at the end of your term, as was your work while a sen - i ant of Monroe township. Last Tuesday evening a taffy pulling took place at the home of Miss Pearl, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hendricks. All on account of Pearl’s birthday—sweet fifteen. Gid Longenberger is still paying $4 per hundred for hogs delivered at Monroe. Jo Hocker was offered a good team of horses and double set of harness for : white Brhma chickens. Jo refused to trade on account of eggs nearing 20c a dozen. Bob Leisure, of Monroe is building hewed log house, daubed with sod. floor will be made with tile bats, roof of hickory bark chimney a sycamore gum, on Bob’s father-in-law’s back forty, three miles southwest of here.
