STATE IbUirAIGNERS. Candidates Named by Democracy to Lead Its Battle. THE PLATFORM ADOPTED. Protective System Unqualifiedly Denounced mid a Small Coterie of Senators Classed as Democratic Masqueraders. Cleveland, Matthews, Voorhees and Turpie Indorsed—Summary of Declarations. Judges—George F. Reinhard. First district. Josephs. DXiley, Fourth district. Secretary—William K. Myers of Madison. • Auditor—Joseph T. Fanning of Marion. Treasurer—Morgan Chandler of Hancock. Attorney General —F. M. GRIFFITHS of Switzerland. Supreme Court Clerk—C. W. Welman of Sullivan. i Superintendent of Public Instruction—- ■ Charles W. Thomas of Harrison. Statistician —Alex Fulton of Wabash. ! Geologist—Eli T. Jordan of Shelby. Indlanapolis, Aug. 16.—The Demo- , cratic state convention, after yesterday listening to Governor Matthews’ address, ! in which he urged no backward step on the tariff issue,' spoke for silver on an equality with gold, declared' the party to , be the friend of labor and stated that i recent disturbances niade clear the necessity of restricted immigration, reviewed state questions with pride and pointed■out the party’s accomplishments, Jhen listened to ■ Ito rending of the'platform as submitted through’ Robert C. Bull of Fort Wayne as chairman of the commit- ■ tee. It began by citing with pride tlie mo- : chanics’ lien law and laws protecting labor organizations, the safety of miners 'and prevention of blacklisting, prohibiting pluck-me stor .s and forbidding importation of Pinkertons or alien "labor, the school book law, Australian election law, fee and . salary law. anil the state board of charities as accomplished Democratic L giskition in spite of Republican opposition. The state tax law was also given unstinted praise. Passing to national issues it said: Tarill Plank. "We affirm our opposition to the viciotis sys- i , tem of class ]■ <;■ Intion, niiscrilleil protection, ' and pled;; • o.irsel.ys so continue the battle i against it until 'every spot-tea of extortion and ’ robber; fostered by the Mi Kinley act shall be i obliterated from our revenue system and people enjoy all the blessings of commercial liberty. The protective system has built up the ; great moire dies and trusts which cpntrol absolutely so m; ny indm tries , aud have done so | much to debauch the politics of the country ( arid-corrupt lire legislative department of the I government. We deno'inee tariff protection I of every kind as a fraud and robbery of the great majority of Americans for the benefit of the few. We maintain that no tariff taxes should be levied except for purposes of revenue only, and That such taxes should be limited to'the necessities of the government honestly and economically administered. We denounce the McKinley law enacted by the Fifty-first congress as the culminating atrocity oPcbtss legislation. . We approve of tire efforts of President Cleveland an I Ins administration and of the Demo-•cra'-ic 1 <• of representatives, and of a large n it : ie Democratic senators, and partita . people as expressed so emphatically at the balI 10l box in November, 1892. We oondemn the Republican party for its persistent effort to prevent the execution of this unmistakably popular Verdict, and we i especially condemn a small coterie of senators i who. masquerading as Democrats, by threats to defeat all tariff legislation, have temporarii ly prevented the Democratic party from carry, iitg out all its pledges to the people for tariff I reforpi, as pronounced in the Democratic platI form of 1892. We congratulate the Democratic i party u|h>ii the fact that, notwithstanding the open opposition of the Republican party aud 1 the conduct of a few pretended Democrats, a substantial measure of reform has been effeetj ed: that many important raw materials have I been placed on the free list: that a material reduction has been made'of the duties on iron ore and coal, and that the tariff tax on nearly all classes of manufactured goods, including i woolens, and of the necessities of daily lite, I have been largely reduced. Call For the Names. There was a loud call by the conven- ' tion for the names of the senators who > had masqueraded as Democrats, but I when Mr. Bell got a chance to say that “the finger of scorn will follow them all ’ along the pathway of life without nam- , ing them’’ the convention quieted down and the reading proceeded with an ap- | proval of the house bills for free sugar, coal, iron and barbed wire and especial indorsement of the income tax measure. | The law taxing greenbacks was heartily approved and the next legislature I urged to enact a law for the taxation of I that class of money. Repeal of the | federal election law was also indorsed. ' A constitutional amendment providing -for the election <jf senators •by a .direct • vote of the people was also favored. I The principles of the American Protective association were denounced as ! illiberal, unwise, unpatriotic, undemoi cratic and nnamerican. ■ Friendship for labor was declared and I every lawful effort to secure its rights I commended, the efforts made to identify their cause with the infamous conspira- ’ cites of lawlessness and anarchy being cond< timed. Opposition was expressed to every manifestation of violence and i mob -spirit, and immigration laws which will exclude pauper and vicious classes who furnish a standing menace to law ! and prosperity were favored. w Financial Plank. * Financial depression and money stringenc- were attributed to Republican enactments and the McKinley bill. Repeal of tie “cowardly Republican makeshift,” the Sherman silver purchasing law, was coni t ne tided. We reaffirm our belief that both gold, and silver should be used as the standard of money of the country, and that both should be coined i without discrimination lietween .either metal i and without charge for mintage. We believe ; it absolutely necessary to the welfare and pro:-;.>-rity of the great producing masses that ! silver should be restored to the place it occu- ■! pied in the currency systems of the world a | quarter of a century ago, and we hail with de--1 light the many signs of the revolution in pub- ■ lie of:uion in the great commercial nations of a restoration of a bimetallic system. We pledge our hearty effort to secure the adoption : of every measure for the complete restoration 1 of silver in our monetary system, and give to the two metals an equal power at all tjniesin the market and in payment of debts, arM we I demand that all paper currency shall be kept i at pur and redeemtyile in such coin. President Cleveland’s administration was indorsed as at 1 . . .airless and patriotic and Governor Matthews’ as wise anti patriotic. It was demanded that congress deal not only generously but bountifully with aged veterans in the matter of pensions. The platform was adopted under a demand for the previous question. The ticket as above given was then nominated. Do not forget the Rome City excursion, August 18th. Train leaves Decatur at 8:06 a. m Fare for the round trip, $1.25. . I «.
