Sheriff Doak went over into Wells county last Saturday. 11 is mission there was known only to a few people hereabouts. Yesterday morninp. however. as the trairt from the west on the Clover Leaf road arrived at the depot Sheriff Doak was seen to alight -from the car. having in charge as a prisoner John W Porter, formerly editor* and proprietor of the Decatur Journal; accompanying Mr Porter was Mrs. Mary Porter his wife and Master I’orter. his son. The Sheriff and his charge proceeded to the county jail, and the prisoner confined to the limits of the enclosure. The news soon spread about tlie city that John W. Porter, late editor and proprietor of the Decatur Journal tiad been arrested on a warrant sworn out bv Mrs. Elizabeth Sparks, charging John W, Porter and Mary Porter his wife, with unlawfully and feloniously take, steal and carry away of the personal goods of her, the said Elizabeth Sparks, oh April 1, 1894 in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, one leather pocket book, of the value of 50 cents, and $25 in money. The following testimony was taken yesterday at the prelininary hearing of the case at the Court House: Elizabeth Sparks.—ldo not know defendants, I saw both on April 1, 1894. at Baptist church, Decatur. I was at church. During services, Porter was in seat I vacated when I came back; had pocket book with me; I know I left it in seat. There was in neighborhood of 825 00 in it. Cross Ex.—Live in Huntington conn ty; had been here since January 1; was at Sunday school; used purse d.u.ring. babbatb school; sat right band; side at end of seat; laid purse down after preaching. I left; did not stay for communion; carried purse in my hand, left it in end of seat; saw it during services; soon as I reached Miller’s t noticed I left pocket book, I immediately went back. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Porter come in, one took seat on one side and other on the other side. Did not see them until they came up to me; He sat in seat opposite side when I came back, be had seat that I vacated. Mrs. Suttles.—Knew Porter April 1 knew Mrs. Sparks; wasatchurch April 1; noticed her; during church he sat at left hand side; after communion ser vices I saw him sit on right side where it has beep described. S. E. Shamp—During church «)/e sat on right hand side; her seat was close to register: during church P. sat on left hand side; during communion services P. changed to seat where Miss Sparks sat. Effie Thomas—l know Miss Sparks; know P when I see him; was at chtirch April!; saw Miss S, and Mr. P. only after church was dismissed for corn munion; saw him occupy seat which Miss S. had vacated. Cross-Ex.— No one in seat but Porter and his boy; took seat just as Miss S. left the seat; just as she came out of the seat he and little boy went in. there was no one else in the seat; during church services Mrs. P. sat with me. Mrs. Walters—l know Miss Sparks; also Mr. and Mrs. Porter; was at church April 1; saw P. there; Miss S. sat close to register; saw him after service near where she sat. Della Baughman—l sat in front of Miss S; P sat on left hand side across aisle fromlier; saw her leave, after she went out P sat in seat she vacated. Cross-Ex.—Can’t say how long she was gone until I saw P in the seat; Mrs. P. came to me in front of Miss S. before she went out; I saw her come in door and say her pocketbook was gone. C. S.
