W'S Blfflffl. ■ ■ I Five Hundred New Cases In HongKong Within a Week. | FOUR HUNDRED ARE FATAL. ' ’ 1 _ • Citizen* Who nt Flmt Co-Operated In Oc- I tcctlon of the Dlseaae Afterward Evaded Inspection and Stoned Sanitary Officer*. 1 Two Hundred Death* a Day In Canton. ! Shipping Point* Alarmed. San Francisco, June 19.—The steamer Belgic arrived yesterday from Hong Kong and Yokohama. The steamer showed a dean bill of health and was allowed to dock without delay. Horn? Kong advices under date of May 24 state that during the week ending May 24 there were 500 new cases of the plague and 400 deaths, the mortality showing very clearly the deadly nature of the disease. So far no Europeans have been attacked. The fact that the plague had broken out in Hong Kong was deliberately concealed by the authorities in order to prevent a scare. Despite the operations of the sanitary staff and the police, assisted by the army medical staff corps and soldiers from the Sharpshire regiment, the 500 new cases had be en reported within a week. To cap the climax, an outbreak of smallpox was dreaded. Shipping Quarter* Alarmed. For a day or two the people thought the epidemic was losing its virulet&e. Another favorable indication appeared to be the co-operation of the Chinese, who were said to be assisting in the detection of cases and the removal of patients to the hospitals. The rate of mortality dropped temporarily. The sanitary authorities gained encouragement and while rain washed out some public and house drains, disinfectants were scattered about and infected houses were cleaned and whitewashed. The prevalence of the disease created a good deal of alarm in the different shipping quarters in communication • with the port, Saignon and the other I ports of the French colonies quarantined i all vessels arriving from Hong Kong. ! Singapore followed suit and the aspect 1 for the shipping interest were becoming ! serious. Discovery Creates Enmity. The plague increased in virulence and the discovery of a greater number of ; cases aroused the enmity of the Chinese, who had for a short time appeared willi ing to co operate with the authorities on bringing to light all the known cases of I the plague. Attempts were made to ■ evade the inspection. Sick persons were ' j removed from house to house at the approach of the police, houses were barricaded and in a few cases the officers ■ were stoned by the infuriated Chinese. Owing to these difficulties the epidemic 'gained renew cd v rulence. News from Canton, where the plague started, states tb it the death rate now averages 200 a day. During March and April they averaged 500 daily. Although the fact that the “black death” was ragI ing in Canton became known only about ' a month ago, it appears that the disease ■ started as long ago as last February. TOMMY MILLER DYING. Boston, June 19. —At the Boston theater last night Bob Fitzsimmons, challenger of Jim Corbett, turned an almost certain defeat into victory. The match was declared a draw, but no one present will ever claim that Choynski is a foeman worthy to combat with the lanky Australian. No less than 3,000 cheering, howling men enjoyed the battle, the like of which even Boston has never seen be- ’ fore. L. E. and W. Boycott Abandoned. Chicago. June 19.—The boycott of the L.
