Indianapolis, June 13.—There is a disparity of opinion among miners of the country on the Columbus wage agreement. A good many assert that the scale will not be indorsed, while quite a goodly proportion are willing to call quits and go to work. This lack of unity is regarded as fatal to the strike, as it is not believed generally that it can be successfully maintained in some districts while others are acquiescing. In some quarters President Mcßride is accused of having sold out. In Indiana the scale does not meet with general approbation, the principal objection of course being that it is a reduction. It is also contended that the difference between block and bituminous mining is not based on equity.. The miners, however, will probably accept defeat graceSully. Ohio men in some quarters are satisfied, while in others there is serious objection. Southern Illinois workmen say they will continue their fight, but those nosjh will graciously take what they can get. Some operators are reported ah displeased, but they are few. The Indiana troops are likely to be withdrawn soon. INDIAN.!. Refused to Commit Themselves. Brazil, Ind., June 13.—The scale fixed by the United Mine Workers and operators at Columbus is not meeting the approbation of the operators here The scale places block coal 10 cents in advance of bituminous coal, and the block operators say it should lie only 5 cents. Several of the most prominent block coal operators of this district were int"--viewed and they were all of the opinion that they had not been fairly dealt with. They refused to state whether they would be bound by the scale, claiming that the matter would have to be discussed by all the operators of the district before a decision could be reached. The miners, though to some extent defeated in their efforts, are satisfied. Dissatisfaction at Washington. Washington, Ind., June 13.—The coal miners in this vicinity are much dissatisfied with the Columbus agreement, as it reduces the paid rate 10 cents on the ton. The miners in this section had no grievance, but went out through sympathy, and are feeling very sore over the turn of affairs. The operators are trying to get an expression from their men, but they will not talk. No coal has been mined in this section since the Canuelburg riot, but everything is quiet. There is some suffering among the families of the miners for the necessities of life. All Quiet at Farmersburg. Farmersburg. Ind., June 13.—The in- I dicatibns here point to a resumption of w-ork in all the mines in this county by tomorrow. The opinion seems to be general that the outcome of the Columbus conference will settle the trouble so far as this section is concerned. The men here are all at work. Those at Shelburn expect to go to work soon. Soldiers, citizens and miners are much elated by the peaceful settlement of the strike. Five companies of militia were sent home from Sullivan. The others are expecting orders to move at any time. Will Probably Accept. Sullivan, Ind., June 13. —The miners here are yery tired of their enforced idleness, having been out of work since May 1, and are in very bad circumstances. It is universally believed that they the Columbus compromise and resume work. The grand jurv is actively endeavoring to fix the responsibility for the violations of law. Seventy w tnesses have been before it, principally miners. » Received No Notice. Terre Haute. Ind., June 13.—Operators here claim to have no official notice of a settlement of the strike. The settlement as reported makes a 10-cent reduction and they doubt if the Indiana miners will agree to it. OHIO. Drunken Miners Create Trouble. Martins Ferry, 0., June 13.—At Wheeling Creek considerable trouble was experienced with drunken miners yesterday. Sledge hammers and crowbars were thrown down the hill at the soldiers, and several shots were fired. General Howe ordered out the Second regiment but no firing was necessaiy. One miner was captured. Several new companies have arrived. The miners hereabouts refuse to accept 60 cents, as agreed upon at the Columbus conference. ILLINOIS. Will Have No Effect There. Danville. Ills., June 13.—President Dietzen of the United Mine Workers of the Danville field snift that the Columbus sett lenient would have no effect Here : whatever, demands were made at . East St. Louis and have .not been accepted/’ he said. “Until they are we will stay out. Air.
