We would respe' (fully intimate to the City Council that Court Street is still used as a feed yard, to the displeasure of all residents in the near vicinity. . ■! . !L ,„.J k 1 1 *" If the 1 catur post-oflicc does not change tenants within the next two weeks, we would respectfully intimate that some one about our size is badly mistaken. The assassination ot Mayor Carter Harrison of Chicago, last Saturday night was the greatest calamity that the country witnessed since the work of Guiteau to President Garfield. If the Decatur Democrat means to insinuate that the News has a circulation of only 150 papers daily. it is simply a talsehood.—Evening News, Oct. 27.VsuG. Which is a falsehood: the statement of the Democrat that the News had 150 of a circulation or that it did not have that number? The Repeal of the Silver Purchase Bill which has been of great annoyance to the country at large, passed the Senate of the United States, last Monday by a vote of 43 to 32. - 1 '~»f. Hitching teams on our main thoroughfares has become such a custom that it would hard for our people to break off from the habit. Nevertheless it is against the city laws to hitch teams for any length of time, and the habit should be discontinued. The Democrat would respectfully intimate to the City Council the propriety of adding another electric light to the city and to be placed on Seconal and Jefferson Streets. Second Street has more travel than all other streets in the city combined, and the idea of only half lighting this thoroughfare is out of order.
The removal of the admiral of our fleet for saluting the admiral of the rebel fleet tu K j • pretty sum mary punishment. Affairs are so mixed up dqwn in those South American countries, vitb their interminable revolutions, that the representatives of this country really don't know at times Ast whom to recognize. - *_ The Who! Truth of .he Situation. 5o engine of oppression is more powerful for robbing the earners of a country than a public debt and every increase of a public debt is in so ■ much an increase of the cppression of the people. This is well enough understood among all who care to understand it. No educated man now really believes the usurer’s maxim that ‘-a public debt is a public blessing." It has been demonstrated that no matter who pays the interest on
public debts first, labor pays it at. last. It comes out'of ccrnii:-;-it is paid by those who earn. Whether they are professional men or day laborers, they have no way of escaping it except, by getting more than they earn. Every man who is not getting more than he earns must get less as an earner as long as usury is to be paid on a public debt. The war ■ debts of the world are now its greatest instruments of oppression. They prevent the elevation of the people and bold the workers of the world in degradation that a few hundred usurers, who produce nothing, may ; revel in luxury. Increase of public debt when it can be avoided is a crime if for,-no other reason than it gives the nonproducing classes who are attempting to live as parasites cfn'thc rest a secure investment for their hoards? Every increase of public debt enables those who hold i,Knot only to draw usury from the carnii/gs ol labor, but to keep their capital out of productive enterprises. In the absence of bonds to hold they are obliged to take the chances of business, and their hoards become subject to the natural laws of redistributicn. *
Wic are generally unwilling to devote much time to objects that are not worthy our notice. However. our evening contemporary courted our attention October 27th and through courtesy to the -paper we stoop to make mention of a few faejrthat may be a benefit to the editor. Our friend, the .lonnral editor, often.goes wild and fills his . iuinns with trash about his neighbor papt?r which perhaps would leave his paper in just as good a condition if what he says had never been said, i’he News claims that he would never do this if he did not lack material to fill his columns. Wo do not like to give the newspaper business away, but we will suggest a good thought to Porter. Mr. Porter instead of talking naughty about your neighbor, leave an old “ad" stand in the place of offensive language. Thetollowing. which appears in the Evening News each day, although out of date, will do because it insults no one: -Special rates to Werhf> Fair, Oct. 7 amt s, Acct. Chicago Day \ over but that don’t make any difference. Mr. Porter, if yon don't want to work the ‘tad’’, business, re-insert some of your old plate matter. Your sub; scribers will only laugh at you. but while in a humorous mood they are not as dangerous as while stirred ! with anger. The idea’of delivering six papers to one subscriber and counting that subscriber as six readers because be reads an old “ad six j times per week becomes, absurd: especially a next door neighbor at that. It is no wx>nder that cur businessmen say that advertising does no good. It is too much on the same style of the Business Di-;
rectory of Decatur that our business, mens contributed to a few weeks ago. Business men search the private houses of Decatur for that precious Directory that ‘was to be placed in eVery feme in the city and see that if you have not been as bad as the farmer who signed a £3so note presented by a lightning rod peddler. The farmer is no; the only man who is being gulled every day. There is no reason why the businessmen of Decatur should be dull. They have had experience enough to know something by “this time. The City Business Directory ought to be enough to open their eyes. If our merchants want their next door' neighbor to know what they have, they should step m and tell them: it is cheaper to do this than to advertise in a 1 pajier that he and no one else reads. Our statement relative to the circulation of the different newspapers of the county is correct. They (especially the Etcnjn" Newsj may vary slightly, but their variance generally tend to I rift them toward the “low water ■ mark.”. '

’Now that there is a prospect of a relief from the pressure .of the -financial-‘piest+oK, the Demoeratieparty expects Mr. ('ievelaud to render unto C j sjfr the’ things which are-Ca-sar’s.
