Some merchants try circulars, signs, schemes, etc. But the best advertising medium is the newspaper. This has been conceded by the most successful business men of the age. iionroe No- 2. Come to life once more after being blown away by the cyclone, which passed over Decatur, August 24th. But the Jubilee singers from Concord carried off the banner for singing an old piece of music which Noah carried through on his mule iu 1700. But we, as a school, do not never expect to go to Decatur again to attend a convention at which judges of music are selected, who do not know what music is, and then the chairman reports on three points and says, position. Just think of it, grading a school on position when lumber was so s?arce that our class of fifty singers were to be graded on position on a platform six by ten only, and an organ on thatyet. We. as a school, did not expect to carry off the banner for singing, for we drove to Decatur through the mud one year ago to sing for a Hag and did not get it after sweeping everything; and this time the entire crowd seem to luve in it for us. for when we arrived everybody had left their wagons in the road, and we were obliged to unload Ourselves, and clear the way, no one looking after the conveniences and care of schools coming in. and were also obliged to order water brought for our little folks, or take them iionm. ’ Now, we. as a school, think honor should go to whom it is due, and Salem schools did the best singing of the day. That is on Sunday school music. Our Sunday schools did not practice anthems aud eolos for Sunday school conteats, nor J ‘ >
did our schools try to Interfere with any others, as did a young man, Marshal, on doming out of town in evening tried to run his horse over our Lady Marshal, nearly throwing her from her horse. Such young men ought to leave Sunday schools. Nay, they would suit better In the woods calling the cows. Now, Mr. Marshal, you are related to aome of our crowd who had some respect for you, but we did not think you were that jealous hearted. J. 11. Lenhart and family Sundayed with Howard Thompson and family. Jesse Roof is advancing rapidly in telegraphy under the instructions of our agent, ;J. A. Hendricks. Jesse is a deserving young man and is sure to come to the front as an operator. If you want to know anything about Pleasant Valley ask Wm. Martz. A number of our citizens will take in the excursion to Petoskey to-day. A number of our citizens were called to Decatur to attend Court in the case of Samuel Wagoner vs. John Badders. Irwin Keinnier has settled down to business,’and opened up a barber shop in the building formerlh occupied by B. ¥. Major. Any one needing anything in that line give him a call. His motto is to try and please. We predict a successful future for Irwin. H. L. Stark of Noble county, is visiting J. A. Hendricks and family. He came through on his bicycle and report' a good time while on the road. Miss Frank Thompson is all O. K. again after her fall from the horse who threjy 1 the saddle off. Roscoe Johnson goes around all of the boys on the road. Better look out boys, as t here is ar fine for running horses. Gilbert Thompson, the -postmaster,from Pleasant Mills, Sundayed with friends at Monroe, Harvey Hocker, the showman, was home again Wednesday. Ami reports having a , good time. Any one wishing to purchase a fast horse, call at Monroe and enquire of Kessler. Monroe had quite a lively dance, Tues-, day evening. Rather chilly, but they danced all the same. Do you smoke? Go to Yager Bio’s. Linn Crove Crist. x Died, on Monday morning, infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Glendenning, age one yeat, Mary, wife of John Haecker. died on Tuesday. This is the second time that Mr. Haecker has been bere’ft of his companion within a few years. Our people are now realizing the extent of blessing they posess when having water plentious. This, nature’s rarest gift is becoming a scarcity among us. On last Sunday night, some young men who should stand higher in social circles conceived the idea of visiting M. L. Kizer’s mellon patch, while he was attending church. They had not solved the probability that the patch might be under the surveilance of some other party and that stealthy ways are often times surrounded by dangerous liabilities, which came near being their experience. Entering the much coveted place, not many mellons were pulled until the pall of the night was made hideous by the report of musketry, which prompted the violators to a hasty retreat, with a few selected mellons, which were left here and there on their route. One, Joe by name, did not get a judicial start in making his run, consequently he prostrated two rows of corn in getting out of the field, while Doc and others were more fortunate and got astride of but one row. In suming up the damages, it was round that five pecks of corn had been knocked off of the stock, besides prostrating several rows . Boys, you came very near appearing at the pearly gates with a perloined mellon under each arm and that in violation of the sacred command which says, “Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep it Holy.” Married, at the office of John Cowan. Esq., Aug. 24, Jesse Eckrote to Retta Twigg. Rufus Krepp is prostrated with fever. Jacob F. Binder, of Washington Tp., Sundayed with the’family of M. L Kizer. Owing to the springing of a leak in the dam of the quarry of Ensley A Meshberger, a force of hands were at work night and day, Sunday not excepted, repairing the same. To do this, it became necessary to pump the water out of that part of the river adjoining the dam. The laborers were somewhat repaid by taking out several large fish, weighing from two to ten pounds. The Evangelicrl people are making extensive repairs to their church in the way of painting and papering. Whenj completed their place of worship will look very inviting. Miss Lenora Huffman left the first of the week for Decatur, to assume the position as teacher in the schools of that place. She has taught in the schools here for several years past. She is an instructor of acquired ability anw broad experience. The Jay County Fair Association will this year use in the Domestic Art* Fine Art, and Cullinary Department, the perforated tag witli property check. This device will do away with the danger of goods getting mixed or taken by wrong parties at the close of the Fair. ■ 1 — David Werling, Preble township, is the boss thresher of the State.
