MORTUARY. Sarah Steele was born in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, February 15. 1819, and died at the home of her son, Dayton Steele, of this city. June 3, 1893, aged 74 years, 3 months and 18 days. She was married to Levi Steele October 19.1837, her maiden being Sarah Barkley, to them were born eleven children, five sons and six daughters, the husband and six of the children before her were called from labor to reward. Iler husband died June 3, 188t>, jus seven years previous, she becoming tired of the pains, cares and anxieties of life, left earth for ther long home in heaven. She was converted at the age of nineteen, and for fifty-five years professed faith in Christ. Funeral services took place at the home of her son. on corner of Monroe and Ninth streets, conducted by Rev. E. E. Davis, assisted by Revs. Roberts and Johnson. The latest confidence game wherein Wells county contributes a couple of “marks,” is worked thusly: A well dressed man with a business look and pocket full of legal docements, drives up to the house of a farmer, and gives the farmer to understand that he has been informed that he has a young son desirous of securing profitable employment in the city. Son is called in and complimented on his Ate physique and graceful bearing. The well dressed man represents himself to be Third Assistant Police Inspector of Chicago, and is out on a tour securing recruits for the Chicago police force. Thinks Farmer's son would do Farmer and son think the same. Farmer advances $25 to pay for son's uniform, club, revolver and hand cuffs. Man goes away. Time passes. Farmer hears of swindling games. All over. HEAD HIM OFF. The Bluffton Chronicle of this week mentions that'a slick thief pried open the lock of the weighing machine, cut off the penny sack with a sharp knife, and took away tiie contents. The machine is emptied every three mouths, and when last observed by the agent in : charge, contained about four pounds of 1 pennies—sl.so pennies to the poundmaking a total of about SO. We are informed that Decatur met with a similar robbery ,_ this week, at the C. & E.- depot, wjiere there is a weighing machine, owned by the same : company as the one at Bluffton. The amount taken here is probably the same. No doubt the thief was on bis way to the world’s fair, and takes this ’ phin of fortifying himself against the 1 many catch-penny games that one has to contend with just now in Chicago. - - 0 Slopped » Senißlion. Readers of the Chronicle will remem--1 her that it contained, a few days ago, an ' item clipped from the Decatur daily, refering to a mysterious couple who were making their headquarters at the Burt House. The couple were Miss Louise ) Selby and John O Felts, and the latter 5 puts a summary stop to all sensational ( conjectures bv the following explanation : “The reporter for that jay paper in Decatur jumped at conclusions Miss j Selby is the daughter of the Markle ho- { tel proprietor, and a.s nice and respectable u lady as can be found anywhere. We did go to Decatur that Sunday just fbr a little pleasure trip, and stopped at the Burt House for dinner. 1 registered 1 from Markle, and was also writing Ifun- ' tington county, but lefit off the word ’ ‘county.’ This left me registered from Markle and Miss Selby from Huntington, as Huntington was on the same line with her name It was not supI posed that anyone would jump onto that register and try to make a sensation out 7 Os it. but it seems the ’News chap did. He first asked the hotel clerk about us, but tiie derk told him nothing. Then the reporter exclaime’i that lie would jn-t an item out of it jiist the same. ' When lie couldn't find out anything he ~i simply hatched up a sensational item I out of his own one-horse brain,”—BlUff--B.j ton Chronicle, 7th Inst.
Monroe Melange. Monroe has but one butcher shop. Poor side-walks and dog-fennel greet the pedestrian everywhere in Monroe. Dock Rainier intended to start a circus, providing his pony colt was whitespotted. He is disappointed, nary white spot. It is said the colt is a species of the ground-hog. Charlie Hacker, with a tear in his eye for his best girl, returned to school at Marion last Monday. Charlie Simcoke, of Marion, made a Hying visit to his home here, last Tuesday, returning Wednesday to resume his position as conductor on the street cars of that city. Mrs. Dr. Andrews is growing better every day. It is thought that she will now entirely recover from her terrible afflictions. Wheat, oats and corn around Monroe is in fine condition. Grasses cannot be beat. Jonathan Burkhead was seen in Monroe last Monday, with a large two-horse huckster wagon, loaded with chicken coops, and all we saw on the wagon, alive, was Jonathan, who was laughing, and two old hens, one wasklucking and the other too poor to kluck. Jonathan said they were first class stock and good layers. You can see and hear frogs in Monroe at any hour, and men and boys are imitating them. Last Sunday there were two crowds of young men, and older ones, trying their activity on the main street, obstructing walks, causing ladies to step off of the side-walk into the mud. Boys should always respect the ladies, and give the path. The citizens in and around Monroe are beginning to feel their keeping, which is evidenced by the fine surreys, buggies, &c., that are being bought and used here. Ferd Kissler and Oliver Hendricks has the only pond in this country between their business houses—that furnishes jubilee singers, that furnish oldfashioned music by day and night, never cease, carrying all parts known in the music of that sort. The Epworth League here is growing in interest, and we hope will prove a boon to the society of Monroe. Long may she wave. Our John W. Hendricks failure, or 1 loss, in the Ellmore bank is not as bad as first reported. Its true John got rid ! of a few thousands of the Jucbre. The Democrat, last week, spoke of the tasy way in which the land-owners and others, along the River road, could build a gravel pike from Patterson & Pillai ’s mill to Mile Creek. The propo--1 sition made I>y Dr. Coverdale and county treasurer Robinson, was that they s would furnish the gravel, and those inc terested in the above road might hauT 5 the same, as their share, towards the r construction thereof. We have not 1 heard of any "break” being made by the land owners or others, to have the same constructed, but hope, ere many 1 days, a commencement will be made 5 thereat and relieve a great-felt want.
