THE FARMER. ’Tis now the merry farmer man Surveys his acres and He feels he has the world’s wealth in The ‘’holler” of his hand. He hears the cries of “haw” and "gee” Ring out across the land, 9 And hears notes of well-being in The "holler” of his hand. And it may be stated right here that the average farmer is not content to let his “hand” do all the “hollerin’ ”at the present time. It matters not how many “hands” he can count on bis broad acres, the farmer, as a rule, is doing his share of the work. If there is a spare horse about the place he is pressed into the service, and if there is any one looking for work one can find it now by inquiring of almost any farmer in the county. The spring rains have lost the most valuable time of the year to the tillers of the soil and now that the glorious sunshine has again made its appearance no time is lost in planting spring crops. The girl who is not in the least ashamed of a healthy appetite. Tbe girl who does’n’t think every every other pretty one “makes up horribly.” The girl who doesn’t pinch her feet into shoes a size and a half too small for her. The girl who will sing under a trifle less than three-quarters of an hour’s persuasion. The girl ,who doesn’t want to stop and stare at every other shop window she passes. The girl who can attend to her own business and not meddle with everybody else’s business. The girl who can purchase a packet of pins and a yard of calico without turning everything over in the shop. The girl who can receive a little polite attention from a man without at once jumping at the conclusion that he’s in love with her. The girl who doesn’t flirt with every stranger she meets in Decatur.
Said a Decatur philospher the other day, “Did you ever notice that while it is necessary to ring the church bells to bring people together for worship and blow whistles to get workmen to the shops at regular hours, everyone gets to the opera house in time to see the curtin go up on the first act.” NOTICE TO CLEAN UP. All citizens of the city of Decatur are hereby notified that we intend to enforce strictly the provisions of the following sections of our City Ordinances: Sec 65. No person, being the owner or occupant of any real estate shall permit any rubbish, noxious weeds, filth, manure or other putrid or perishable matter whatever, to accumulate on or be on any street or alley bordering on such real estate. Sec. 74. Any person who shall violate any or either of these provisions of this ordinance, or any section, clause, or provision of any section of this ordinance, or who shall neglect or fail to comply with either or any of the requirements thereof, shall upon conviction before the Mayor, forfeit and pay a fine of not less than one dollar nor more than one hundred dollars, with costs of prosecution; to which may be added imprisonment not exceeding thirty days in the city or county prison. All citizens will therefore please take notice that we will prosecute any owner or occupant of real estate violating the above sections without regard to who the offender may bo. Warm weather is coming on and the city must be kept clean to avoid sickness. J. T. Archbold, Street Commissioner. M. F. Cowan, City Marshal. A Decatur girl thus describes the man she’d like to marry: “A man too noble to commit a mean act, but generous enough to forgive one. A man as gentle as a woman, as manly as a man, one who does not talk scandal or tell disagreeable truths.” That surely isn’t asking much.
