From a report of field experiments with corn at Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station, they produce the following facts and figures regarding the early and late planting of corn—also thick and thin planting of corn. This experiment was begun in 1888, and has been carried on continuously since, except in 1891. The yields obtained are as follows: Yields from Early and Late Planting, Bush, per Acre. No. Date. 1892. Average 1 May 15t53.08 2 May 8-llth .46.151.77 3 May 15-16th.43.045.09 4 ......May 21-22d..42.445.73 5 .....May 59th....39.1 .... > 41.45 The average yields show a steady falling off from late planting. The above results were obtained on a naturally drained soil and with a medium early variety of corn. Thick and Thin Planting. This experiment has been continued seven years. The planting has been done every year with a two-horse drill planter, three and two-thirds feet wide, which drops the grains singly at approximately the distances shown in the accompanying table: Bush per acre. No, 1892. Average. 1 .;. inches6o.2 55.62 2 12« " 42.663.95 3 13S£ “ 45.754.15 4 16)4 " 42.2,.49.58 6 19% “ 39.346.15 The table shows a steady decrease in yield from thin planting. The above results were obtained from a medium sized variety of corn. While the yield was increased by thick planting, the per cent, of unmarketable corn was also slightly increased. The ears were, of course, also reduced in size, thus increasing the labor and expense of husking. If the corn is to be grown for silage, it is probable that even better results would be obtained by dropping the kernels of corn only six or eight inches apart. If the crop is to be husked it will be well to drop the kernels twelve to fourteen inches apart. This will secure larger ears and the saving in gathering will more than offset the slightly decreased yield, due to thinner planting. A number of social folks, who formerly renewed friendships over a social glass, have concluded that there might be a snake in the glass instead of the “grass,” now enjoy themselves ih a friendly chat.
